Yo guys.

After years of making music on Ableton i've decided to get rid of all my gear and go down the SP route. Got myself a 303 and i'm feelin it already.

Any advice you would give to someone who has gone from a digital to analog way of working?

Straight away i'm noticing I have to get more creative in ways to chop up samples. I cant just see it on a screen like I used to :)

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

i too started with ableton and then moved on to use an SP mostly

heres a beat i made when i used ableton

heres the first beat i made on an SP404

my method was just more about sampling various sources... chopping up the samples and just layering them over drum beats in the pattern sequencer. what i noticed in the difference is that there was less to think about with the SP as far as navigation so its a bit more comfortable.

Wow dude its interesting to hear the difference between those two tracks. Definitely more of a swing in the one you did on the SP.

Yeah it definitely seems like that's the way....layering and using samples from different places creatively.

You can make a good snare by sampling the sound of your computer as it hits the ground after you throw it out of the window

i can vouch for this guy!

my mac made the most perfect crunchy rim shot after i dropkicked it straight out of my life

seriously though i'm in the exact same boat as you dude!

a couple month's in and i'm finding the levels game hard as you have no meter to monitor it on but just focus on getting levels right from the start and don't be afraid to get as many self recorded sounds in there.

I've been experimenting with just anything round the house like knives and forks and clanging them together - can get some mad grooves going on after processing and looping.

Same here bruh. Was fed up with working behind the laptop (i got an office job where i work 40 hours behind a laptop). Got a 303, and shortly after that the 404 og and even the 202.

I love the SP. Just sitting, sampling (everything. Vinyl, CD, YouTube, whatever), layering, bouncing back and forth between the SP's.

It deff. brought back the fun in making beats for me.

So with you on this dude.... Sitting on a computer all day and then making music on the same device just feels souless. I think people underestimate the importance of having one device that is made to do one thing.

And maaan you have 3 :-) Sick. I'm thinking about getting a 404sx to go with 303. Seems like a good combo.

@indkah Yeah man not seeing levels is hard to get used to! But I think you learn to base it off how it sounds rather than what level its hitting. Which is so nice.
