Maybe I'm a bit behind but in the last couple of years I have found way more interesting stuff on cassette at the local goodwill/Sally shops than on vinyl. It's hard to find anything unchristmas/religious anymore but the cassette bin has been overflowing with weird unique stuff.....just an observation.

We're entering a new phase I think...

30+ years of crate-digging has stripped out the good vinyl, or second-hand stores I notice these days slap fuggin redickulous prices on anything remotely interesting... (I hardly bother anymore)

Cassettes on the other hand... and I'm not talking about commercial releases... thrift-store home-made mix-tapes or... nah, seriously the mind boggles when you think of all the crazy shit that found its way on to tape in the hands of everyman-joe-public between the demise of the reel-to-reel and the advent of the cdr-burner... most of it unlabeled

More or less the same situation here where I'm at. City is very spread out so all the ma & pa shops are few-and-far between which almost guarantees that anything of interest will probably be taken.

So, started digging around in the tape bins almost exclusively to avoid all that. At the highest price of twenty-five cents/per... kinda hard to pass up. The only downside is having to rewind/fast forward to find the piece you want.

My local thrift store scored me some ilk finds on vinyl.
A couple months ago I found The Winstons Amen Brother on 45. I was stoked. It was a little beat but the drum break played fine.

I dig in the cassette stack a little, but its not much better as far as selection. So I just stick to vinyl.

Plus, my cassette player has a broken rewind/fast forward. So when I pass by something I want to sample I got to pop the tape out and play the other side, then flip the tape back around.

I like sampling fron vinyl far better.

Ya, being forced to redefine cheap is a let down.

Nothing wrong with using tapes, and they do offer a warm sound. As far as thrift stores go, it just takes time to dig. You gotta remember that most thrift stores take donations. If you want vinyl that's worth money for rare funk, soul, disco, psychedelic rock, or new wave, you're going to be lucky to find those, since those are going to be worth a bit of dough to most used record stores. THAT'S WHY a lot of the thrift store vinyls are sorta garbage. A lot of Englebert Humperdink, Percy Faith, or some bs gospel/Christian records, and a lot of Polka records. These are the records nobody's willing to buy, but hey, if you got some money to burn, maybe with some imagination and some SP magic, you might find SOMETHING you can flip. I try to find weird records from thrift stores, I'll show you a few I picked up just because they looked sorta interesting. I didn't spend much for them, just a buck each, so it just depends on trying what you find.

Good stuff! True, the search is part of the fun. I have found that if I have time and venture outside of these twin cities of Minneapolis and st.paul, I can find interesting stuff as you have. But lately it has just been Christmas music. Who knew there was so much Christmas music produced and sold! And yes, the sp can turn the subtlest sample into a freak out!
