hi board
hope you wont mind a quick Q... or 2...?

can't get my head around workflow and sample loading, just loads every sample on card?
any way to either choose or preview a sample from CF?
do you guys just put what you need on per project?
i was hoping to have a go to kit laid out on F/J permanently and some transitions on E/I..

do banks c-J stream off of CF or are they also loaded to internal?

had a card fail on me today which is a bit boring, anyone get to the bottom of whether a CF-SD card adapter will work, i have an SD slot on the mac so would be a simpler solution..
finally does anyone bother turning off the sp to remove CF card as it advises in manual?

Hi,
Yeah the loading situation on the SP was very confusing at first for me, but I think I have some answers...

"just loads every sample on card?

A card reader is your best friend. First, save all your samples to the card, one-by-one or bank-by-bank. You can preview the samples on your computer before dumping them into a new folder or whatever in the arrangement you want.

"do you guys just put what you need on per project?" If you include the ROLAND folder in your 'list' on the card, there is no need to manually load samples, just drag and drop. Keep in mind that the ROLAND folder is where (I think?) all the other info about the samples is stored... i.e. start/end points, timestretch settings.

"i was hoping to have a go to kit laid out on F/J permanently and some transitions on E/I.."

Might as well just use Banks A and B (internal) When I play live I program my set in a way where every bank is a different 'song'. I do this by moving a bank from one card to banks a or B using the switch command, then inserting the card I want to put them on and manually switching them back out to my desired bank.. It takes a long time to do but you can finalize the card's new settings again without screwing up anything... hope that makes sense.

"do banks c-J stream off of CF or are they also loaded to internal?"

Only A and B banks are internal. Samples will remain on the card just the way you left them when the SP is turned off but they will not show up when using a computer to preview or move them unless they have been saved onto the card by way of commanding on the 404.

"had a card fail on me today which is a bit boring, anyone get to the bottom of whether a CF-SD card adapter will work, i have an SD slot on the mac so would be a simpler solution.."

I've been wondering about this too... if it works that would be awesome because I have more SD cards than CF cards and I don't really need so many of them.

"finally does anyone bother turning off the sp to remove CF card as it advises in manual?"

ALWAYS turn off the SP before you remove/insert a card. I have lost timestretch/BPM settings on samples by not doing this, as well as some samples became glitched out (in a bad way) and the card became corrupted in that the SP acted like it couldn't recognize them when I would try to save or load samples. I see alot of people switch cards while the power is on, and I guess they don't have problems but I cringe when I see it, thinking of how much it sucked rebuilding my set when this happened to me.

thanks for taking the time on this
yeah have a card reader and dumped some wavs across, not to the "Roland folder" just straight to card but all of the samples load until pads are full across all banks. so i guess i need to load in a bit at a time as i need, ? seems like a lot of "tooing and froing" and fuss though , i have Ableton so have started tempo matching a few like minded loops and transfer them across for playing out, perhaps record some live jams for loop farming later
let me know if the SD card adapter works, CF cards seem a little expensive and delicate..
love the sound and immediacy of the 404 just want to ensure my methodology is correct as it seems limited and fussy in some trad forms but endless and creative in others..
