So Im really just starting out producing and I know the basic functions of the sp.But Im still stuck as to how to produce a complete track on it...do people arrange chops first, then put drums on each part of the track and resample to each pad, then resample themselves playing each pad in order onto a final pad,and then add effects.or is it all preference...and what is a good method for someone just stating out to follow.I dont really want to use the pattern sequencer as it just seems too complicated, unless there is an easy method to that that someone could fill me in on b/c right now it seems too intimidating. Please help out if you can yall...thanks.

I just got mine a month or so ago but I'm finding it's pretty easy to do whole tracks using the resampling method. I don't use the sequencer at all. What I've been doing is keeping kicks/snares/hats on the FGH banks and copying them to the B bank when I want to do a track. Then I'll sample something (anything)...Records, Youtube shit, I have an OP-1, iPhone apps, whatever. Then once i have a few samples I like, I'll take the drum samples and work up a drum track using resampling. Usually I'll do the kick and snare, then resample w the hats. Then I'll add effects. Then I'll play the samples over top of that, and repeat...add effects. When I have something I like, I'll copy it to a pad on the A bank. When I've filled up the A and B bank with tracks I'll copy all of that to the DAW for finishing or additional work etc. I'm just starting with it so I wouldn't say the tracks are anything great but it's a start, and I've learned a lot about the 404 just by doing this kind of thing. It's a great machine. Love not being tied to the computer for a change.
Hope that helps a bit...

yeah, there's different ways. I used to use the sequencer. It's not that hard, it's pretty simple actually ( read the manual!) but I realized It made my tracks too square. Anyways, it's all about resampling. What i'll do too is, I'll record a click track on tape and play it in speakers while I'll record the beat. Sometimes, I'll start with the main samples, chords or a loop or whatever, so It gives you your timing, if it's chords, I'll play the click and record the progression, and if it's a loop with percussion in it or drums, I'll just record according to feel. Then, resample and record the beat. Then, I'll usually record the final track by playing live the different parts( drums and main samples) and playing one shots and bass in real time so it keeps a human feel. You'll find your own workflow after a while.

really it depends on what you're going for. if you like looser beats, the resample method will work for you. If you like sharper timing or more mechanical style beats the sequencer is your best friend. this being said, keep in mind you can always record to the sequencer with quantize off...and then turn it on for other parts. I'm not a sp user anymore so i'm a bit out of the groove...but it is a box that does not have any rights or wrongs.
