Ok through trials and tribulations, i.'m finally able to start funding my home studio set up and need a few questions answered before i start buying things.

I'll be running a hard/software set up consisting of :

Laptop - Reason, FL,etc. (have)
SP404 or 505
krk rokits
Focusrite audio interface
Midi keyboard
USB TT

My main focus will be production but i would also like to perform live sets with the SP404/505 at some point. (think dibiase or kaytranada) and much sampling and learn to sequence with it.

1. Can the sp505 do live sets as well as the 404 when beat/song selection (also smooth transition) rather than playing seperate sounds live? Mixes?

2. What cables do i need to buy to run the turntable into to interface and sp404 /505?

3. USB TT or Analog?

4. If question 1 is answered, which would better benefit my ideal set up?

I'm aware there's no midi playback w/ the sp.

Also any other tips and advice from others with home set ups.

thank you sp

sp505 has a more detailed sequencer than the 404 one; saying this, i say another thing: the 404 is better in a live context: more timing (1giga), easier interface (fx, reverse, start/end point etc)...the 505 is more for building up tracks (patterns or songs), that's cool, but the 404 is more intuitive.
a way to make confortable the 505 for live could be to play permanently with the fx assign mode, but it's not pratical to change patterns...maybe you could build up songs in order to play them live with that fx set...the "limit" of this way is that you cannot improvise with the song structure like on pattern mode (and on 404 pattern sequencer...)
ps
i own a 505

O ok thanks for clearing that part up. This will be my 1st SP or any hardware for that matter so i'm curious about the ins and outs as well as workflows.

I'm drawn in by the "limitations" that push creativity

I would get both 404 and 505. I currently have sp808 and sp606 and when using two samplers your creative power just goes unlimited.

I am not sure how well the 404 or the 505 are as far as sample editing but the sp808 is the bomb for precision sampling. I noticed when watching videos of people using the 404 that they are mostly doing single shot samples where they fire the sample each time they hit a pad, actually haven't seen too many videos where they loop stuff. Not saying you can't loop samples but I wonder about the accuracy of the loop.

But I do have my eye for the sp404, I like that its kinda small and I thought for a live set that it would be awesome to have 3 samplers, one doing drums and vocals, one doing synth loops and one doing fx samples.

As far as cables go, I would make up my mind which devices I would get and then decide on the cabling requirements. If you end up buying extra cabling don't stress cuz you will probably end up using it down the road.

Hi,

Cannot offer much but for me the SX rules above all others when it comes to working with a computer. Just last night I popped the SD card in my computer and grabbed some recordings I made right off the card. It is all .wav file and named intuitively.

I own a 505 and had an OG 404 but don't have enough exp with those to offer you any help there. Love the 505 though- a lot.
