Try picking 4 or 8 bars of something you are talking about and just focus on recreating it. Only work on that one loop. Keep it as simple as possible but that has the feel you are after. If you have a step sequencer try it on there where you can see each drum on the 16 steps lit up.
Keep at it! Failure precedes success!

just set your tempo to 82.7 to get a kind of swing or somethin...use a kick & a snare...or clap snap whatever... dont add too many drums...if its one bar...just use one kick and one snare...now go sample some live percussion...and add that in the background with no metronome... i think it has more to do with the percussion...find some crazy...weird sounding stuff....go open a bag of Dorito chips in front of a mic and sample that

nothing wrong with your groove- sounds hand made and has a lot of swing- not sure what you envision but layering helps as well as developing a track around it where you can bring other elements in and out. Here is a quick edit that might give you an idea or 2 I hope. Added a sound behind, then bass, then just tried to mirror the kick and snare hits with diff samples for 2 bars.

I think the first loop sounds great- textured and mysterious and also has an even tempo. When the drums come in halfway through the sounds are good but they are too disconnected rhythmically from the loop underneath for my taste. The loop underneath is at about 94bpm. I think you are going for a sort of off time sort of beat, correct? It is important IMO when doing this to never let another kick or snare in the 1st loop to pass without hitting your new kick/snare. In other words for every original kick/snare you need to hit the new kick/snare -before- the next kick/snare hits in the orig loop. So you can be "late" in hitting as much as you like but once you drift too far the 2 beats get totally out of sync and it is just confusing. (unless you are going for polyrhythms where the 2nd beat is a diff time sig and eventually merges again on the "1" then drifts again)

Anyway- that's my opinion, hope it helps. I can show you later if you want like I did with the first but I think you are on the right track- I liked the sound of the beat and loop a lot- just too disconnected for my taste.

1- I just listened to your last beat a bunch and it is actually great- your drums swing behind the beat but the snare was always on the "1" of the melodic loop underneath.

2- that link you sent is just him playing VERY simple drums to a song underneath. he has sped the song up and the =song= is what has interesting/odd timed changes which he follows with the drums. I think your drums are much more interesting.

as for what I wrote earlier, you actually demonstrated in both of your beats already- you just have a style that places the kick drum in very different accents than most beats where the kick is basically on the 1 and 3. If you don't understand think of a simple beat where you would count "1, 2, 3, 4"

All I was saying was if you start with a loop and you can count the loop "1, 2, 3, 4" and say the kick is on 1/3 and snare on 2/4, whatever drums you add on top- no matter how behind or in front of the beat you want to put them- try to make sure that for every "1, 2, 3, 4" you add a kick and snare.
in other words don't have you new drums "drift" away from the old loop to where you lose measures all together. i can make an example but hopefully you can understand what I mean. it is like if you had 2 different beats playing at the same time and they were not synced or connected and they just drif out of time with each other- not good. like 2 songs playing at the same time- they are not the same and the drums and sounds clash and do not sync.

You CAN of course drift and have 2 beats drift and not stay synced 1 measure for 1 measure, this is just opinion, but i like it when music "swings" and all stays connected in some way to the main tempo and beat. Like I said- you last beat does this- if you listen carefully your first kick of your drum phrase is actually just BEFORE the "1" of the loop underneath.
this is your drums on top- x=kick, i=snare:
x xix xxxx i

the first kick is just before the "1", and the last snare is always on the end of the loop underneath- you can hear it there is like a high keyboard chord every time.

I also just listened to the first beat you sent and it is also fine-
I can count the hi-hat 12345678 and snare is always on 3 and 7 and kick swings a lot but is consistent as well. I think you have an interesting ear and should keep working on your own sound.

I am not sure if we ever clarified what you are unhappy with or what you are trying to emulate but I think if you like the "feel" of the beats you make but are still bored by them then maybe focus on adding other elements and textures like you did in your last beat.
