ok so no doubt youve had threads like this before but i couldnt find anything that went into detail when i was trying this out

ive made beats on the sequencer of my 404 for ages and never tried building one up via resampling, also i wanted to try and get some ducking from the kick. i made some really simple synth loops to make things simple.

this was the order i did it:

-32 bars or so of the chords
-bass
-lead
-hi hats and snare
-kick with some compression and louder than everything else

then i resampled the whole track to another pad with a compressor on it. the compressor is so ridiculously harsh i couldnt get it working nicely no matter the settings (i find this any time i try to use the compressor). plus it flattens everything anyway. i tried the vinyl sim compressor but that was too slow to react.

every time i resampled with another part i turned them down to match so it didnt clip

what did i do wrong? has anybody got any tips on which is a good order and how to organise mixing them together? how about tips on an order that makes it easy to keep stuff in time?

anything at all that will help with ducking would be great too

heres the track in case anybody wants to know what im talking about:
https://soundcloud.com/nosmoking/precip ... -n/s-DfRo6

i dont want feedback or anything i just want to show what kind of results i managed to get... if its not appropriate ill take it down

cheers

i think you have to turn effect limit mode on to get the parameters for the ducking

Don't know about the 404 but on my 303 I usually boost the low end on my kick before compression. Turn the sample or synths pad down to like 75 and then play your drums over it. Use comp with attack all the way down, and the other knobs all the way up.

mess with the sound levels of your snare hi hat and kick in relation to your main sample or samples and play with the compressor knobs and just listen to the variety you can get. Usually I find that having the attack knob 2 all the way to the right and the kick always seems to pop over the rest of the compressed stuff. good luck

For the resampling heads out there...if you don't want ALL your music ducked, you can resample drums and bassline together and have the bass duck down.

Basically, your kick is going to be normal volume. Set everything else (snare, hats, bass notes) to a lower volume and put the compressor on everything. This will get a good bass duck to keep your bottom clean. Then resample that sample with your musical elements layered on top and you'll have a clean low end with out 'pumping' the music much if you're going for a cleaner vibe.

Hey guys, I have a quick question to ask you.

Is there a difference between compressing all the tracks via the "remain" "mfx" buttons VS. resampling each sample and drum hit with the compressor while having the compressor button off? In simpler words, is there a difference between compressing everything as a whole versus resampling each individually compressed track?

Thanks guys!

yes. compression on individual hits can help with apparent volume and tone (or hurt if you do it to death). You can do the same with a whole track, but you can also use it as a mixing tool or even a musical effect (e.g. the pumping they're talking about. you can even use a sound that isn't there to get a rhythmic effect out of other samples)

i still dont do the 'breathing effect' much but I remember FORMAL explain a SP hack workaround to emulate the effect.

1.! create a low bass note, lower than human hearing.

2. sample + low bass + compressor > duck_effect

so, when you hit the bass sample it will duck out the sample a bit, the compressor must be on the sample and the bass, try it and post your result if it works or not.
