This past week I've been working exclusively in my SP-404 and I'm loving it. Usually I use my SP to collect and process samples to chop and sequence on my mac.

When I first purchased my og404 in 2005 I would load my disk onto the computer I would plug it back to the SP and play around, build up some soundscape or make a beat or two as a fun exercise to challenge myself and stay sharp. Over the years I've gotten away from that.

Now I'm on a high in the swing of this workflow and I can see getting ahead of myself with bouncing samples down : ruining the sound and not being able to get it back.

So if anyone has any general tips, or even some fundamental techniques that I might be overlooking, I'm interested in hearing what people have to share.

thanks

as far as levels go a good way to still have a good mixdown when resampling would be to first sequence it in the pattern sequencer. then once youved mixed down and eqd everything the way you want. rebuild it with the resample method.

why not use the 99 bar technique? same benefits as resampling but you can go back and delete sounds, swap pads/samples, plus you're not limited to two stereo voices

Put sequence to 99 bars. lay down your drums or sample then stop sequence. record over that with whatever you need until you have a beat, rinse repeat. Same idea as the resample method but using the sequencer set to 99 bars so you can change the volume of samples/replace them or delete them from the sequence. Same idea but more flexible.

if im around a computer this is what i do:

1) play the sample on the Sp 303. turn on whatever FX im wanting and instead of resampling the wet signal to another pad on the Sp 303, I record the wet signal into my PC.

2) i have a basic palette with about 10 tracks (each track represents a different sound in my beat, ie kick, snare, clhat, bass, etc.)

3) i keep the samples on the Sp 303, so when i do this method for my other tracks and I say "i dont really like flanger on my snare"... i can just go back to my PC, delete the snare track and replay the snare with another FX.

ps, this can also be done using something like an MPC

and i dont replay entire 3-4 minute track when i dont like a certain FX, i'll just play a few notes and then once the wet signal is in my PC, i'll just copy and paste...takes all of about 10-15 seconds.
