I'm either going for the sp 404sx or 606, I'm leaning towards the 404sx because of the portability aspect however, I like the 606 since it has a wave editor and mute groups but no djxloop effect>

If you had a choice which one, or any other recommendations?, please don't say mv as they're pretty rare and expensive here in the UK

cheers, already have maschine so maybe the 404sx would be better for me as the portability is nice however, no wave editor seems daunting for me. Plus I love Brainfeeder and its amazing that peeps like Teebs makes music with the 404

the 606 is a pioneeristic maschine (sampler+soundcard+fx etc), so if you got the NI maschine go for the 404.
however, the 606 got the subsonic effect too.
as other said, the 404 (303, 555) are more live-approach oriented, the 505/606 are more build tracks oriented.
maybe a compromise could be the 555: soundcard,dj looper effects etc (but not the wave editor)

Nope. Even the ones that carry the same name (vinyl sim) have a different sound on both SPs.

Owning Maschine & a 606 is pretty different. Sure the 606 lead to the Maschine but they have completely unrelated workflows & design. 606 doesn't need a computer for a start. It's OK to play live on (I've done it), even if it's a bit bulkier than a 404. Don't forget dudes play live on MPC2500s & they're huge compared to SPs.

Teebs doesn't actually use the 404 to make his music, it's Fruity Loops. He plays live with the 404. Check this XLR8R article.

As far as sp goes
I tried the 404 og and
The 555 now i use te 555
In making and constructing
my beats as well as playing it live.
For me the 555 is a powerhouse
you got 16 pads plus the fx board.
I wouldnt trade it for anything
I sold my 404 beforr but now im trying to cop a 404
and the mpd to control the 555 coz the pads
are getting beat up then hook it to the 404
As an external fx unit with the 555. So yeah thats
Me being a sp fanboy i hope they come out with
An sp with the mv pads :D

thanks for the advice guys, I come from a mpc background 2500, and 1000 with jjos however, had to sell it to keep a roof over my head.

Now I have maschine, its pretty decent and the slicing features are really good though I love a mpc again but one thing I didn't like was that it got stale with limited effects but the sequencer was awesome. However, I started using Ableton more nowadays and gettig a mpc again would be a step back.

So I guess I'm looking for something different, I be exporting wavs to resample however, there be times I be making a old skool beat just sampling vinyl and make a typical boom bap beat.

The 606 looks nice but difficult to source
555 looks Ok but prices are high
404sx love portability and well its totally different than I used.

My 404sx is my best friend....I've never had a piece of gear that I've loved as much as this ill fucker. Seriously inspiring, and half the fun is experimenting and figuring out fun workarounds. I do weird, experimental stuff and the 404sx has made me even forget that I have a full recording studio with ableton upstairs....my new studio is my 404sx, an ipad, and my trusty microKorg synth....all next to my comfy la-Z-boy recliner!

Al hail SP boxes!

if you can get a good deal on it, the SP555 is great. Loop capture, more effects, D-beam (good for filter)

If not, i'd go 404sx (faster, pattern copy, no wav compression) or 404 (og vinyl sim).

just a update, but been looking at the 606 but one thing that kinda killed it was no manual chopping, you can copy via clipboard and edit the start and end points but that would be so tedious.

the 505 has non destructive sampling, no mute groups sadly but man the 505 sounds better than the 606 for chopping stuff up.

The 505 destructive chops...

What happens is you select the sample you want it to autochop and the machine copies that sample to the internal chop bank. At this point you have the ability to adjust the start/end points before finalizing. Once you specify those chops it will apply them to the chop bank. These chops can't really be edited once chopped. The chops can be made smaller, but that is it. You can always go back to the original sample since that wasn't edited.

Chopping is really pretty fast on the 505. I can accomplish the same tasks on a 505 just as fast as my 404. Just different ways of doing the same task. BTW I never use the chop lab on the 505. I just sample the "chops" I want from the sample source the first time around. So this way I don't even really need the WAV editor. 505 and 606 chop pretty much the same way.
