Hopfully someone can help me out here....alright so if I got a recording chain of Mic to preamp, preamp to mixer, mixer to sp..and I have an instrumental playing from a cd into the mixer...and I'm monitoring thru the mixer- can I set it up so the sp just records the vocal? To be more clear is there a way to have both the vocal and instrumental going into the mixer, but then mute the output of the instrumental Chanel so the sp just records the vocal? Hopefully that makes sense. Or would I have to get a second mixer strictly for monitoring? BTW the mixer I would be recording thru is just a low end behringer or yamaha 8 Chanel w efx. Thanks in advance,i'd appreciate the help.

Is this a dj mixer with a crossfader? Does your sound system have outputs? You might have to reorder your chain.

you could have your instrumental panned left and your vocals panned right, then record only the mixers right channel into the sp as mono. most mixers bring all the channels into a single stereo mix for the output.
my mixer has a cue option where i can assign one two or three inputs to be outputted to the headphone mix using a fader. so if you have that you can have a vocal on cue thru your headphone output to your sp with your other inputs not selected, then you would still be able to hear the full inst. and vocal mix thru the stereo outs. i have a behringer dx626

Hmmm..well the vocals gonna be recorded mono regardless,so that parts no problem..but are u saying if I could do it like this that the instrumental and vocal wouldn't sound panned in the headphones? I'd probably have a hard time recording w them panned.thanks IIIII

Man I'm tripping,I didn't realize how cheap a boss br864 is..just gonna get one of those and call it a wrap...I figured it would be cheaper for me to just record into the sp- which it is..but then was thinking about how I could only record w one effect and would have to resample my vox a few times to get all the efx I want (comp, reverb, delay,eq) which is where the mixer w efx came in.I just wanna record my vox w all effects applied and not have to fuck w them after.just gonna get this br and record w reverb and delay, thru the 404 vinyl sim compression.not that complicated,I'm stupid,lol...

You would have a panning problem, but you could get a little stereo to mono converter to help your headphone sound, if you don't want to buy that new mixer. But new gear is more fun so I would get the mixer too

Well the br is an 8 track recorder w mad efx that I can get for about the same price as the mixer.I used to have the 900 too,so I wouldn't have anything to learn..I was so focused on trying to find workarounds that I overlooked the obvious.

Hey a.D., you passed on the BR-900? Pity you got rid of it, it looked sweet.

Honestly I'd be inclined to get a new BR-800, they don't cost that much these days. They can record 4 channels in at once (4 mono, 2 stereo), can act as an an audio/control interface with a DAW, better memory cards (takes SD cards, heaps more available), heaps more compact & cleaner design. Only real advantage the BR-864 has is midi-out for sync-recording the SP.
