i got some headphones that i still use, but then my beat sounds like shit, i still use the fucking things. they destroyed a 1/3 of my 'carreers' integrity . only because they are the only that didnt fall apart in 2 weeks is the reason I still use them,

it sounds the same if I listen with the headphones again but if i run it thru speakers it has 3-6 db of low end super power that may be harmful innocent bystanders wellbeing, i usually try not be a jerk with levels, especially bass. but most people dont leave the 404 master jacked to full i think either.

the only solution i got is to use a boom box to monitor, but i gotta keep it pretty stealth on that too cause i work at night.

Headphones are such a pain in the ass. Mixes never sound right the next day, drunken freestyling is a bit awkward, and they make it more difficult to dance around your space. Luckily, I've been blessed with neighbors that either don't notice, don't care, or don't have the balls to call me out on my volume.

what are those headphone for: monitoring or not? what label/model too?
personally i have some audiotechnica special for monitoring. i use them rarely. they're really flat and all. i never really mixed with them. sometimes it's however interesting to listen music with them to "discover" mix or mastering errors etc. but i prefer and tend to use real monitors and cheap hifi systems. also little shitty and cheap pc speakers are wellcome. or the great boomboxes, as you say. the important thing is to be able to make some confrontations and comparisons on different systems and try to find what is good/bad on those different listens.
saying this, there is a big "BUT"...i work my music in a basement, so no neighbours complaint, nor family complaint (but a bit of humidity :) )

I have a pair of cheap skullcandy headphones i use for everything, but i always check my mix on the speaker system i have... i always end up changing shit after i plug into the speakers, i always blast it loud and put the subwoofer volume on full when i use the speakers to check, sometimes my neighbors bang on the wall haha. Thats just apartment life

Hey dudes.
I use headphones quite a bit when producing, but never when I mix or master. Google "mixing with headphones" and read some of the articles and horror stories.
I've got some Audio Technica cans that cost me $50. Good quality and sound.

I heard some people wich mix with headphones. The fact is to not be stuck on just one system of listen.

i monitor my mixes through computer speakers w a sub and the laptop speakers. if i gig out i can check a mix on a big system but thats not always preferable, above all else i look and would suggest, looking at some kinda of visualizer, visual eq, spectrum whatever you have that shows the meters of the different EQ's.

I remember a movie once of a lame band recording a lame album and then the sound engineer took them for a spin in his really old car, playing the album on the car's cassette player. He said "this is how 99% of the people are going to hear your music". That's basically everything one needs to know about mastering in my humble opinion.

that's true. the more listen systems is the best way. i used to do that more before (listen my tracks on a car after mastering), but it's important to remember how good is to do it.
