So recently i purchased at 202 and im about to purchase a midi controller is my first time going into well music and most of my questions are cables and set rigs.

1. i want to hook my 202 up to my mac and trigger the sample on it how would i do that and what cable would i need?

2.whenever i finshed sampling something on my 202 at the end of each sample i get a popping noise that is from me pushing the rec button how do i resample that on a 202 and cut out of part of the sample?

3. i would like to connect to this cassette player i got from Walmart and sample well you know what cables would i need to connect the two?

4. also i would like to hook my 202 to my i touch then grab samples off of my itouch and record them on my 202 what cables would i need to do that

Welcome Soliatera! No problems about the noob questions, you gotta start somewhere! To try & answer your questions...

You'll need an audio interface that has both audio & midi ports (in case you end up sequencing the SP with a DAW or whatever). I'm not too familiar with setting these up or what's good (but don't buy Behringer, the quality's crap), but for an idea of what's out there have a look at this website: Store DJ.

If you get an audio interface make sure that when you set it up you know what direction the messages should go. Do you want to sample your Mac with the SP-202? If so make sure the interface's audio out goes into the SP.

Most midi controllers these days connect to PCs via USB so there shouldn't be any conflict with the audio interface (unless you run out of USB ports).

I'm not a 202 user (606), but try using the 'mark' button to get the sample to start after or end before any unwanted noises. Sorry for being lame, but more on this should be in the manual. If you don't have it click this link.

Not knowing what connections you have on the tape player, I assume its based on the walkman design & has the small headphone connection (3.5mm). For that you'll need an RCA to 3.5mm cable. They look like this:

The shop where I nabbed that pic looks like a nerd's paradise: https://www.mycablemart.com/

Otherwise try RCA to 1/4inch or simply RCA on both ends. From there you should be able to figure out which cable's right for the tape player.

Same cable as the pic, champ!

^hope all that makes sense, let me know if it doesn't.

OK so if you're doing things super simple just get a card reader & a memory card for the SP-202. Any old USB card reader will do.

To do some basic transfers to & from the PC make sure you format the card in the SP first. Turn the SP off, put the card in the card reader, hook it up to the Mac then click & drag your wav/aiff file into the card (don't set up file directories in the card, the SP won't recognise them). Eject the card, put it back into the SP & import the sample to a pad. That easy.

Pages 35 & 36 of the manual (remember I linked it to you) describe the exact process to import/export files.

Click this for a Google search of appropriate card readers

Well what do you plan on doing with the midi controller & what are you looking at buying?

If all you're gonna do is chop up samples & export them to the SP you don't need a midi controller. If you're gonna make stuff with a DAW like Ableton, Logic or Reason then hook up the midi controller to your Mac. If you want to integrate the SP with a DAW (& spend a bit more cash), get an audio interface & a controller.

If you're looking at buying a 16pad MPC style midi controller you may be able to hook it up with a midi cable & have it trigger the 2 banks of the SP's pads at once. It might be cool or it might suck because the 202 only has a 4 voice polyphony & extra pads might that limit more obvious. The 202 has a maximum of 4 mono sounds playing at once or 2 sounds in stereo. Frankly I wouldn't bother hooking up any kind of midi controller to the 202 unless the pads are worn out.

Consider the SP as its own midi controller & sound module in one. The way its designed is so you can access all of its features quickly & easily. These days midi controllers are designed more for DAWs than for hardware.

For more info on how to use the SP-202 you might want to pose questions about it in the 202 sub-forum as well. That way you know those who answer your questions actually have the same sampler & probably have experience in what you're asking.

Well this is ghetto basic, but you could get a USB to midi cable & hook your DAW direct to the SP. That way you can sequence the SP via the DAW. Click here for pics.

Problem with doing that is your Mac will play sounds separately to the SP. The SP won't play your Mac's sounds & vice versa. To get the sound from multiple place to go to a unified audio out for headphones or speakers you'll need a small mixing desk. If you don't plan on buying any more gear you can find some cheap 4 channel mixers out there. If you plan on getting more hardware instruments get something like a Yamaha 82cx. I had one & loved it, really rugged & basic construction. Total workhorse & sounded CLEAN... But I traded it for a bigger Yamaha mixer. :D

To integrate everything the best option's to get an audio interface. Then run midi from the DAW into the SP & audio from the SP into the DAW. Most DAWs will allow external recording into them. What DAW are you using?

An audio interface will allow you to sequence the SP in your DAW & send audio to it at the same time. So if you want to put some drums into the SP you can play those drums & send synths from the DAW into the SP at the same time. Then play with the effects across all of it & record the results back into the Mac FTW.

The midi controller (again, what are you using?) won't sequence your SP. It simply sends notes as they're played by the user, they don't store & memorise patterns played into them. Use it on your DAW, not your SP.

Ah, so if you're using Logic you should be able to set up the audio interface + SP loop I was describing above.

Sorry but I'm not familiar with using Logic or Akia midi controllers, so all I can suggest is to check the midi channels & audio busses on your set-up. Is the Akia set to the midi same channel as the Logic device you want to control? Have you routed the audio from the device to the Logic mixer's audio out?
