I'd like to make more this kind of stuff. I don't own a decent mic though.

Here's the old experiment I did. I made all the sounds by tapping the 404's internal mic with my fingers and then did some resampling.

Ill beat! I love found sound but have never been able to use any of it "coherently". You did a nice job even though it still retains a good lofi sound.

On the subject of field recordings, http://www.quietamerican.org/links.html has a bunch of tips for homebrew diy field gear. I've been searching for an affordable/quality mic and preamp but I may resort to using the SP's internal mic just to see what I can make from it. I figured it was kind of a throwaway feature but this thread's opened me up to seeing the value in it.

Just up loaded a new song to myspace. I use three field recordings in the song, all recorder at the central station in Gothenburg… One sample recorded with the internal mic, two recorded with mics connected to the sp-404 via a mixer (battery powered). It’s the song “Go By Bus”… :)

I'm glad I read this thread. I am going to travel for a few weeks and was planning on taking my recorder. I've been inspired to record at the airport and on the train. sweet idea.

This idea is what originally attracted me to the 404. I have taken some great samples from rusty swing sets and used very little effect on them, Ive found some of little use but a few magical swings inside which amazing melodies are locked. This approach truly turns sampling into an art form, and Ive been toying with the idea of doing some themed joints where all the samples are related to the topic.

If you want lo-fi, nothing beats an old cassette tape recorder for the source recording, then use the headphone out to sample...can u say tape hiss!!!!

Time to open up the field recording thread again! I’ve made a track with (mostly) sounds recorded on this very spot N57.71004 E11.97282. Kick, bas, choirs are from Bob Marley and Jonny Cash. The track is long measured with SP_Forums standard… (is that proper English…?).

:ow well does the sp-404 work for this?

Do you find any advantage to using something like a zoom h2 and then transferring to the 404

Use the H2 on the field. Then transfer to the 404. Let me hear some results!
