I know a lot of you are pretty knowledgable audiophiles as well as beatmakers-what knob setting (rate, bit, filter) when using lo fi mfx do you feel most closely emulates a 12 bit sound? I'd really appreciate some feed on this,i'm always struggling with where exactly i should position each knob and get insecure as to whether I could've had things sounding better....

just turn the 'bit' knob to how you want it... 12 will be somewhere in it's range
It shouldn't really matter what the actual bitrate youve selected is as long as it sounds the way you want it to.

If you're trying to sound like a specific console/computer/etc there is a bit more to it than just the bitrate used

Thanks..but what i'm saying is i'm never quite sure exactly where i want it..but you're saying that with lo-fi applied, pretty much any adjustment of the bit knob will be in the range of 12? What about rate and filter? I guess the sound i would be going after the most would be the sp-1200 and the mpc 60- and yes,i realize those machines sounds have just as much to do with the converters in the machines, how they were built,etc-i'm just wondering if ther'e a specific setting some people might use that creates a sound as close to these machines as possible..I usually put the rate a little above nine o clock, the bit about one o clock and the filter at about five(that's for drums, for sample i could put the rate as far up as 12 or 1 or clock, filter 3 o clock-and turn the bit knob as far right as possible without getting a bunch of backround noise)...just wondering about how others go about this,or if there's other settings drastically different that sound really dope.

i notice adding some bass with isolator or eq before resampling with lofi, makes it sound a little bit like a mpc 60

if i remember correctly on the sp 505, it gives you a graphical representation of the freuqncies involved in the knob tuning, maybe someone with an sp 505 can share what knob settings correlate with with bit depth and sample rate. thanks in advance ( if its relevant )

on the sp606 it shows you the bit rate number...around 9 o'clock is 12 bit, 10 or 11 o'clock is 10 bit, round 12 o'clock is 8 bit and then somewhere round 2 o'clock it crosses into 6 bit. around 7 or 8 o'clock it says 14 bit, but where it would be at 16 bit it's "off" (all the way to the left). hope that helps. but yea I'd say 12 bit is around 9 o'clock based on that. to my ear this correlates pretty well with what I hear on the sp404 lo fi

Yea,thanks man...see i had no idea that the 12 o'clock area is all the way down to 8 bit,i've always set it way past 9 o'clock(for drums) this'll definitely help me out

but wait a second,lol- i've always set the "rat" knob, which i'm assuming is the sample rate, around 9 o'clock... does the 606,505 also list the sample rate?the 1200 is 26.04 kHz,the mpc 60 like 40 kHz I think-i'd be going for something in between those ranges....

yea sorry for the confusion of saying bit 'rate'. i was talking bout the bit setting, knob 2...the sampling rate, knob 1, I never really push that jawn past 11 or 12'oclock, and usually more around 9'oclock...gets a lil too tweaked out for my liking when you go hard on knob 1...but to answer your question, nah the 606 at least does not give you a number for the sampling rate. it's just another black box sp knob

well, i figure since the sample rate on the sp(404 at least) is 44 kHz..then the rate knob at 12 o'clock should be 22...so i'm thinking if i'm doing the math right,lol- 26(like the sp-1200) should be about between 10 & 11 o'clock or so,and 40(like the mpc60)should be a little above the mid point between 6 and 7 o'clock ... .So there you have it folks both the sp-1200 and mpc-60 sample rates and bits-as close as you can get to the machines sounds minus their unique coverters and all that :D

for sp's with a 44 kHz sample rate-

12 bit,26 kHz(sp-1200) - rate knob between 10-11 o'clock, bit knob at 9 o'clock

12 bit, 40 kHz (mpc 60)- rate slightly below 7 o'clock, bit knob at 9 o'clock

---give or take....

damn i'm sick of typing o'clock, lol
this is dope though, thanks for helping me figure this out Sinapse(and crunk),for real, hopefully i'm not the last person in sp land to figure this out & it's helpful to some people,i know it will be for me.

it was that simple?lol-thanks yo yo,damn...alright so looks like 12 bit's actually more in the between the 10 and 11 area-assuming the 505 and 404 both have pretty much the same lo fi mfx. Judging by the sound I'd say it's pretty much on point. Not that i can tell much of a diference in the sound with the bit knob anywhere between the 9 and 12 area, but it's good to know precisely where the right settings are at,instead of going just by ear. Appreciate you taking the time to post the pic!

i meant take the sample and make it lofi , then run isolator on it with bass then resample it to hifi, makes it sound cool
