Just ordered a pair of the Audio Technica ATHM40FS too. They're only $56 on Amazon with free shipping! I'm pretty sure they're going to be a lot better than my old set of Sony MDR-7502's I've been hatin on for years. The Sony's have no bass, are uncomfortable to wear for very long, and still cost $50. I'd say it's about time I picked up a different pair.

Yeah, mdr-7502's are like the mdr-150's tight and causes ear fatigue when using for long periods of time. 7506's fit over the ear nicely and have given me some pretty balanced mixes when I hear my beats on different sound systems, but I still new to hearing my mixes so accurately. A lot of my old stuff I can hear where I mixed the bass too loud and it ate my kick sound, it's easier to distinguish which sounds are clashing and where I can fit something else in to correct.
If I had seen this thread I would have probably saved the 50 bucks and got those audia technicas, the reviews are great on Amazon. I do like the fact that 7506's come with an exploded technical diagram so that you can order and replace components rather than the whole headphone set if a part fails, that's so crucial to my thrifty/broke nature.

Guitar Center can have some tardy ass people in pro audio.

understatement of the year? i think so! I don't think I've ever had a purchase/transaction at any guitar center that went off with out some sort of fuck up on their part...

Yeah they are almost always a total fail. I think the oxygen levels are too low in their stores... still they are the only music store that carries most the gear I want. For headphones I use ultrasone...not good for volume or for booming bass, but for mixing they are great.

I've used these for years, have three pairs now, love them! not fatiguing and I'm so used to them by now that I do most of my mixing on them

glad i did.

Ive never had monitors to mix ive been mixing with some 10 dollar sony head phones. If i pick up the audio-technica ATH-M40fs will they do the job for mixing instead of buying some expenssive monitors ?

headphones won't be able to give you a good balanced stereo-image (except for headphone listeners).. stereo effects are always greatly exaggerated.

besides that, bass is always a little suffering on headphones..

other than that I'm sure you could do OK.. I guess ou dont know how the room will react to your sound, but thats always so variable anyway, given that we dont all live in 10m x 10m x 10m cubes

I use a combination of headphones when I create. I like to use ultrasones and get a mix and I always check them out in a cheap pair of skullcandys. I think its always good to listen through different elements before having a final version of your music. Most of your listeners will hear them through cheap speakers/headphones. Thats why I do this :D

If you are ultimately doing your final mix on a computer with headphones, you can use something like isone pro. It's great for monitor simulation. Unfortunately for me it's PC only, the closest thing on the mac is redline monitor.. but it's not nearly on the same level as isone pro.
