I don't have the pre, but I have the RNC, and it is great for the price.
Pretty much no one disses their boxes- unless you are a super jaded zillionaire. The pre has excellent reviews.

I personally have this pre:
http://www.dbxpro.com/386/386.php

It is in that range and it has the added bonus of a SPDIF out- had the thing for almost 9 years!- Still going strong- got the RNC inserted into it- low budget lovely!

the FMR pre is not that great

for 300 you can get a Groove Tubes Brick and for another 250 you could get a DBX 160x for compression and that would give you a good start...

I heard the True P Solo is a good option too, if you want a good strong clean sound

so many wack mcs are gettin shine nowadays, not sayin this cat is skillful or wack but i read ina scratch magazine the juelz santanna drop 30k on plugins his cpu and somethin else but how wack is that type of move? old timers will tell u u can make a whole album from a 4 track not 40k of em.

my point is gear lust is one thing but buyin allotta top notch shyt b4 u have any skill is another. id kill for a cat like BLUEPRINT or AESOP ROCK or fukin PASE ROCK to have a top ten album! they do it with skill the same stuff we use. shyt i remember the RZA talkin bout how all of the CLans vocal comps when dbx 160s tailored to eat cat. thefirst malib Quais album was done for a couple hundred. but these wack dude got full blown SSL consouls , 20k in rack mounts and 1 gold album!?? wtf is goin on?

i've heard good things about the really nice preamp, but i chose to get the old-school mbox with the focusrite preamps. bought it for like 100 bucks. More VINYL!!

There is alot of good mic pres, please don't get me wrong my buddy has the mBox 2 adn those focusrite pres are decent granted he has a NeumannU87 and AKG c414 (just like mine) and those mics help improve the sound quailty. But the mic pre is the first in the signal chain so it should be excellent.. someone mention the DBX 386 those silver series mic pres are GREAT! I've gotten great results off of those pres.. Are you looking for a tube pre?

These are my top pick for the range your seeking..

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=183610 (excellent sounding, I have this one myself for keys)

For that dirty warmth sound (EPMD strictly Business)
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=180173

For that straight clean sound you can't go wrong with Grace.. I have this for my female R&B artists
