whatup!

i got the 404 on the side to play around with once in a while and recently find myself picking it up more and more...

like alot of people out here probably, i'm deep into madlibs stuff and got interested in the sp line that way...

NOW... in alot of his beats, you obiously hear the timestretching... its distorted, but has a certain appeal to it and is more than acceptable...

i can't help but get the idea that the 303 has a better time stretch than the 404... on the 404 it gets so ugly that i just can't really stand it...

are there people out here who have both and compared them? is it true the sp303 has a little smoother sound compared to the staccato sounding 404 stretch?

It's the exact same algorithm on both. He uses other effects more than timestretch which is way you could be having a problem, madlib is a dj first producer second so he more than likely beatmatches his samples like a dj with turntables.

it'd be interesting to load the same sample into both machines and record the streth at various BPMs, maybe a breakbeat and also something more melodic without drums

edit: just read Doc's post...you sure it's the exact same algorhythm? i figured there'd have to be some difference, even simply in how the the stretched sound is replicated in each machine

You'd think, but Mike Acosta from Roland has posted on here himself that the effects engine is the same. For instance the "new" DJFX Looper scratch effect can be done on the 303 with the tape echo effect and playing with the cntrl knobs. Just experiment with the knobs and you can easily make the same scratching sounds. Roland just found a better way to sell the same thing. I guess in that way the only difference is the pads, which is a big thing to me since I usually record most of my drums and samples without quantize.

iight thanks.... keep discovering new dope ways to use it, just have to adjust my workflow to get the most out of it...

i usually work on the mpc3000 and do all the work after the sampling, just have to do a little eq-ing and pitching before i hit record ;)

maybe its the higher sound quality of the 404 that makes the stretching sound uglier... like a saw that needs some smoothing ;)

ive used alot of the SP line. Its all the same. The 555 is a little cleaner but not by much.

Yeah, if you get in the practice of pre-eq a sound then sampling it then the sounds will blend better. It's easier to have a few ideas you'd like to try based around what already works for you. Also on the sp's if you have like a one or two note sample than you don't have to bother with timestretch, you just have to place it on a 1/4 note and it will fit pretty well.
