I wreckognize this from listening to DJ Quik's productions ( especially The Book of David)

sound is like marble .. don't use a sledge hammer to shizzle, it takes refined knowledge and applied techniques to carve a statue of magnificence with many different sized implements

That's just your perception about his production skills. If you compare his work to a contemporary composer it would seem like he's using a chainsaw to carve his masterpiece too. Some examples that come to my mind are Hans Zimmer, Philip Glass or John Williams. They all use technology like a wizard combined with tradition compositional skills to create stuff that would blow most hiphop producers out of the water.

On a side note, it is said John Williams creates his compositions with only a pen and paper..... Old School!

The composer of the soundtrack to the anime AKIRA invented the 'clips' system on a macintosh hooked up to digital recorders since he was forced to compose all the 'sounds' before the movie was completed and then use the sounds to score the film.
