Hey everyone,

New here - recently picked up the sx and I've read a lot of your posts and it's helped me immensely so thanks for that. I've used an mpc for years but that broke so picked up the sx. It's awesome.

Anyway, so most people don't use the seq much? Resample and and play your drums (which I like because it has the heavily swung sound!) Loop that up and then start playing your samples and all that... is this the way it's done?

No way to eq the drums then when you track out (worried about things getting muddy as they always seem to do-and sidechaining)? I've got ableton and could of course use that but I'm enjoying putting things in the box right now...

Uhhh what else? I dunno workflow advice with ableton/synths/samples? Think that's it for now!

Love the forum- what up Dibia$e and Jonwayne!!!

PEEEEEAAAACCEEEE!!!!!!

i hardly ever use resample to make my beats, reason is. I usually end up making 15 minutes space noize songs.

usuing the sequencer on the 404 will teach you alot about sound quality.

and you can always to multi tracks with a daw.

the only time i make live beats really is with my st224. sampled into my 404

a couple of my fattest joints were done like this.

My mate uses the resample function to built up beats, but I don't like the lack of control I have afterwards when doing that.

I always like editing sounds after I have a pattern down. The sx is class for that as I can copy a 1 bar pattern over and over and then take out bits or add bits!

Once I've then got my patterns, I'll tempo sync with Ableton so I can record bits in there. I like a lot of FX changes so I'll record the same bits over again, but with say a wah-wah on, etc. Then I'll arrange those bits on one track in Ableton.

That's how I'm working atm, and I'm really liking my flow atm.

Hopefully have something to show for it soon!

I use the re-sampling method to build beats but what i like to do is sequence everything using the 404sx sequencer(i set it to 99bars and play away) and then mix down the track elements. once thats done, i take all the samples and rebuild the track using the re-sample method.

basically a way to make sure your samples are mixed down correctly instead of creating the track and then wishing you could go back and adjust the bass or whatever.

I always resample beats. But I use the SP's polyphony like multitracks of a DAW to my advantage. My SP-606 is 8 polyphony, so thats 8 tracks for me. Pad 1 will be the drum track where I resample a drum performance, pad 2 will be the bassline track, pad 3 to 16 will be those funky sounds I find. Then I record them into the sequencer with little effort because I already putted in the work during resampling.

all my beats are microwaves, resample then play live drums when recording out. done. im sure my beats suffer as a result, but it's so much fun this way.

with my actual songs, i use alot of resampling but us the sp like a multitracker like green said. then mute cetain bits when i record, then add bass/guitar and vocal parts.

nothing gets programmed, i looooooove resampling, change my whole approach. getting my sample trak by the end of the week, amped at the new resample possibilities.

I appreciate resmapling isn't for everyone.

Just started making beats with resample only and I really really enjoy it, at least for the beat/groove. Getting down a snare/hihat pattern that has a nice bounce to it already then layering on some heavy kicks and a bass to back up the kicks/ghost notes and you got a nice swing beat. I always feel like im racing against the metronome when using sequence but with resampling it's all you, your internal clock and feel. Probably won't build all of my beats this way but definitely a new look on how things can get done :D

I now use the exact same method with my MS-1 and SP505 after reading your post on the MS-1 thread.
You never know I might actually get a track finished one day with the new improved workflow.

Yeah, its a dope lo-fi studio and probably good for Glitch music. I came across the idea after being frustrated that the 505 doesn't have pitch tuning like the MS-1. I said, "no pitch huh? I'll make you get pitch" and began sampling stuff into the MS and then pass it to the 505. After a while, I made full beats on the MS then pass it to a pad and began building within the 505. I used to spend 6 hours a day with that set-up, its really a tweak-a-thon when you get deep enough.
