another pitch thread.

Post by LO- »

just another pitch rant, so where should I start, I could probably go on for a few thousand word essay, but just drew a total blank, anyone one know the difference in processor from say the 202 vs. st 224 , which has full pitch.
I chose st 224 as an example to compare processors, because it does not get hot in the slightest, like a 202. the mpc gets warm, I just cant figure why they leave it out, it is pretty much a sampling production nececity. and from my experiments, with sample rates on the 404, the sp 404 is able to play sounds at a different pitch/speed, by changing the sample rate. so why not throw in some quick feature that does that, just copies the pad and spits out a bunch of pitched samples, chromaticly tuned. well again MY battery is running out way to fast, so Myabe ill think of something soon. to complete my pitch rant. peace.

404 and 404SX do not have playback speed adjust at all (ie "true pitch", tape speed, etc) only the pitch that keeps playback length and speed the same which generally blows. I have heard it work good on a few occasions but rarely.

Also, my 202 never gets hot- that sounds strange.

jessh i gotta learn to communicate better,

I meant, if you adjust the sample rate on your computer of the same sample, with cool edit or adobe, say 16 bit 44100 khz, now adjust the sample rate to 16 bit 22050 khz, the sample will now play at half speed when you import it into the sp.

I meant, the 202 does NOT get hot just like 224, does not get hot. they stay cool, I should have compared the 303 or 404 to 224. > the difference processor wise. or whatever would else would be the reason to neglect the true pitch feature.

I remember ellaguru mention, maybe change the header in the wav file to trick the sp, and play the samples at a different speed.

Well if you are going to use a computer you can just adjust the playback speed of your DAW to exactly what you need for what you are working on, not just half speed. No need to jump through hoops messing with headers etc. Just adjust to taste, render and import. Or even just sample the output of your DAW and make it even simpler. I use Reaper. I just don't want to use a computer and often don't have a computer with me anyway when I am out in the field w my 404.

My beef is that none of the SP can do this while so many samplers can and it is such an obvious part of sampling production. Major oversight by Roland IMO. The feature does not require cpu rally to do- the SP-202 does it so all of the latter SP family could do it as well. It was a design decision on their part for some reason.

well perhaps it will always be a mystery. maybe the minimal design, and minimal logic required to just playback samples. makes it more affordable ?

I just took apart my 606, and noticed inside there is an update, slot. weird.

leading to an entire section of the board unused stamped 'update' the
other switch points to normal .

there is toshiba processors, I think the 404 is crystal.

I also found out by reading the comments on the cuirit board, that you
can just hit record, (this solves my sticky stop button issue) another tale for another day, but the inside is crazy. with super cheap plastic teeth that strike, little clicky buttons, that wear out and dont fix. the rubber pads can be easily fixed with TINFOIL and tape. the membrane surface has conductors on it, when they wear out, the pads dont push.

the sample rate trick can actually chromaticly tune an entire octave, I actually wrote a little script that does this for you, with sound touch , audio strecthing engine, and started a little app, but the math became, a little over whelming.

http://www.goldennumber.net/music/

that is about as far as I got, before my mind exploded and gave up.

the program actually dumped 12 samples, chromaticly tuned to the memory card, for quick import of a pitched bank of samples.
