dakim vid / setup question

Post by dishwater »

watch this first:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmQ7AMnooj0

what gear is he rocking here? a 505 and what kind of korg as a midi controller?
It's really interesting to see how he builds things up though I haven't got much of a clue. Love his music though.

edit: at 12:08 you can see the synth from a better angle.

it seems like it's the microkorg sampler...
someway (maybe via midi or maybe just using them as send/return like on 4tracks recorders?) he's controlling 505's fx tempo's...
it's interesting how he use that sampler like a sort of big loop pedal but with keys...

do you think he's got them hooked up, or is he using the live looping capabilities of the microsampler? supposing there are any

From what i saw, i think he uses the (assuming) microsampler to make loop sequencing live and then he controls the 505 fx in sync in someway. I have to check the microsampler manual to see better. Once i tried that machine (the korg one) on a shop but i didn't liked its sound....but who knows...

i looked better the set, if you take a look from 23:35 to 24mins circa, you can see that he uses the 505 as a "pedal looper style thing" (505's delay or tape echo fx), just simply adding samples live (from the microsampler) rhyhtmcally in tempo with echo's tempo and sometimes creatively using the echo like a sort of ducking (sidechaningish) effect.

ah, i thought something of the sort, by the way he just dropped samples in and kept adding sounds into the groove.
I tried to do the same on the 303 but couldn't get it, tried with both delay and tape echo at different parameter settings. Later I realized it might be the machines bpm setting that controls part of those fx?

ok i finally 'get' dakim. heard things before on youtube but now i understand the hype. some of it is still unlistenable but i'm loving his approach, how each song builds up from one sound and keeps morphing. that beat near the end is nuts!

it must be delay--don't think you can do those long 1/4 or 1/2 notes with tape echo. such a ghetto way of making beats...pretty genius, really

i've tried with 303 and 606, delay and tape echo both, the feedback controls the breathing (sort of ducking), the thing is that the samples tend to go lofi after some repetitions....also; i noticed that when he works delay/tape echo on the 505, he pushs also pads on it simultaneously...anyway i will try too in my 505...

I came here to post this specific thread, I'm happy I was beaten to it.

So, anyone able to figure it out already?

AT 6:50 he had a really big latency since playing the keys to having them output, doesn't that mean it's basically delay on the works? What can get get around is those swing shifts he does with the knob
Is this even possible with a 404?

it's basically delay+feedback, he pushes keys (microsampler) and pads (505) to have kicks hihats snares on the main "structure" and then melodies/grooves with the microsampler, swinged/breathed with the 505 delay (or tape echo)....what i don't understand is: how can he manage the feedback to not to tend it to completely noise?

You're right, I've been fiddling around with Delay with t=1 and I managed to reach some similar results. But then the only thing I can tweak is the time and have some REALLY random results, most of the times the littlest tweak on the Time knob just distorts everything intro a million clicks.

Feedback is only fading out stuff but he does something with it when triggering stuff.

...maybe we should have the opinion of some Microsampler head, maybe there is something about the korg machine's fx that could explain those things...

thanks for the further speculation in this thread... I've been rewatching the video, and I tried building a beat like this on the 303, I did get some nice results with a hihat with delay on it, with pattern bpm set at the lowest... that was the only way I got some similar disjointed haphazard groove like he does here.

maybe we'll figure it out IN THE FUTURE : D

I FIGURED IT OUT WITH THE SP404SX ONLY USING DELAY. I RECORED MYSELF FUCKING AROUND FOR 30 MINUTES PRESSING RANDOM BUTTNS, ALSO HAD MY MIC IN ADDING VOICE SOUNDS. I CUT OUT 3 PRETTY GOOD EXAMPLES.

PRESS REMAIN+DELAY///CTRL1 SET TO T2///CTRL 2 ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT///CTRL 3 ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT///START WITH A DRUM PATTERN OR SOMETHING AND LET IT LOOP///SLOWLY FADE TO LEFT TO DIM SOUNDS WHILE ADDING NEW ONES///RIGHT TO LEFT REALLY FAST TO GET THE SIDECHAIN EFFECT///TURN CTRL 2 ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT AND WAIT FOR ALL SOUNDS TO STOP///

HOPE IT HELPS
