I just got my 404 the other day and I've been through the manual and i know the basics.

I just wanted to ask all the pros what helped them learn the 404? What resources would you suggest? Anything and everything is greatly appreciated!

Respect,

Kyle

just sample records and chop em up- experience is the best way. Also stop by here and see what folks gotta say. Other than that I dont think your gonna get much help with the SP.

^^^ Yes, it's pretty straightforward. Almost any musical idea you come up with can be accomplished with a little sweat and some lateral thinking. It's really an amazingly intuitive machine.

If you come up with any specific questions or wonderings, post it up here. I'm sure you'll get 8 or 9 different answers on how to execute your idea. 8 or 9 correct answers, that is.

I studied people's music that use the 303 as well as all the producers I admire
like Pete Rock, Prince Paul, Rza, Eligh, J Dilla, MadLib, QuestLove, A-Plus, etc. Also a lot of experimentation with sounds and also different styles of beats from Golden Era to Hyphy. I found this site by way of someones post on youtube after I had figured out all the tricks to use the 303, but if I had access to this site 2 years ago I would've been saved a lot of time, but I look at it like building a good foundation and wouldn't go back if to learn this stuff quicker if I could.

kyle whatever you do, don't turn pro - you can't compete in the olympics if you do....

i agree w/ the posts above. looking up sp- stuff on youtube showed me a few tricks i didn't know about, watching vids of dudes who use the 404 helped too (and i don't just roll w/ the hip hop, so the animal collective stuff, fourtet stuff, etc., really helps me learn) and just practice practice practice. this forum's been an unbelievable resource which refines what i'm doing.

soon: olympic gold!

joining the battles can be a big help. Listening to how people flip the samples differently can open you up to alot of very good new ideas.
