I was messing around with some sample player software, nothing serious, but I figured out why the SP-404SX I had (now long gone) sounded horrible.

I was running a full drum set on it, one shot samples, with an electribe at the controls.

It had an annoying high-end on the high hats.

The problem was that it doesn't have mute groups for the high-hats. I do remember the snare and toms sounding quite interesting, with the reverb especially. I guess it would work with patterns that use only one high hat (open or closed doesn't matter, the same sample would just re-trigger so it won't get too trebly).

So now I know what to expect if I ever decide to get another SP, 303 or whatever.

you just gotta put them on gate mode and hold it down for as long as u want it to play, or make a chopped short copy of the hihat sample...

It's a little bit of effort, but solvable

yeah, it could be done even with the electribe sequencing, with an extra synth track (to do the gates) on the same midi channel, but it takes much more work that way. realtime sequencing no problem though.

yeah.. Or if you have one of the sampler/drum synth electribes, they have choke parts
