so the delete trick (press delete, samples are basically played like a bootleg mute group and cut each other off MPC-style) can't be resampled or recorded inside the sp-404sx's internal sequencer. would it be possible to use another sequencer (i.e. the novation circuit) and record the sequence that way?

I don't see the reason why it wouldn't work. If the sounds are coming out of the SP you can record them. Period.
I mean you can record it in virtually any production software, just set the tempo of the project to match the one being played on the SP, so that the grid marks cut your pattern / loop appropriately and save you the trouble later, though it's really a minute work either way. I mean cutting it out later in sound forge or wherever, that's no biggie.
I'm not really sure what you're asking :) maybe I got this wrong, my English ain't perfect. But, generally if the sound is coming out of the device = you can record it, obviously. What you do on that particular device, and how are you creating the sounds, is of no importance to the device that's recording those said sounds
Another question would be - which device to use to capture it, but that's a personal preference really. Use what suits your work flow the best

No, you can't use an external sequencer to capture that. You can, however, use some sort of a recorder, be it another sampler or DAW or cassette deck or whatever, to capture that audio. Then, you can sample that back into the SP, if you want.
