Well, Reaper is not actually free...

Anyway...

While I haven't tried the latest versions of Audacity, I can tell you that it's supposed to be more of an Audio Editor and simple Recorder then a Multitrack Recorder/DAW. Reaper is a full blown DAW, tried one of the latest versions in november or so and it was really great, very intuitive and it is reasonably cheap too.

For simple audio editing and recording (freeware) I like Yamaha's TWE better but if you want to support Audacity then go for it.

I'd stick with reaper unless you have some kinda dislike about it

Aren't you guys comparing apples with oranges?

Reaper is a more or less full-featured midi/audio sequencer, while Audacity is a wave editor. Completely different kind of things.

i use reaper myself, it's dope. only $50+ for a license, and it's light on my CPU.

I tried Audacity, but to me it seems more like a wave editor than a full DAW.

Yeah, Audacity ain't really a DAW at all, but I do use it to convert to MP3 a lot.

Reaper however is probably much more convenient when it comes to sequencer / midi based music production as a whole if you want to do DAW style editing or add new stuff. Reaper can do loads (dare I say everything) when it comes to that, but in the end both serve perfectly fine as a simple 'recorder' program if needs be.

You can even multi-track into Audacity if you want to.

The short answer to that is 'no'. It doesn't come with a gigabytes worth library of samples. It does allow for quite some plug-ins that are instruments or instrument-based, but you'll have to search that yourself.
