just outa curiousity. . .do alot of your guys beats have all (or most) samples from the same song? like multiple samples from the same song in one beat? ive been doing that alot (im still new) and dont kno if thats frowned upon or something that is common and accepted

or do almost all of your beats have multiple samples each one from different songs? (not including drums)

depends man, i would think most of the time we use one song that makes the basis for the entire beat, obv the drums come from elsewhere, but one of the samples usually creates whats would be considered the melody or progression used in the beat, and then if there are other samples from other songs stacked on top of it its based around that main sample chops, one thing thats good to do is keep an ear open for things that could definitely be layered on top of shit, like cool open piano parts or stabs and stuff, write it down, and then when you make a fresh beat look at your notes and see if anything could be stacked on top of it, even if its just one note or tone, heres a good example i think most should recognize,

obv from pyramids on bk 1+2, but i've heard it on a few of the beat tape beats, and he used it again on medicine show 1 too, shit takes a long time to get good at knowing what to use when and remembering where all the sounds you have are, just gotta stay workin at it and not get discouraged

i used to ask myself the same questions. I also read what everyone else has said on this topic and I agree with them. it takes time. just have fun with it. remember to always enjoy making music. what ever comes out afterwards is like a report of what you've learned so far.

Lately I threw all the stuff that I sampled with my laptop in a huge folder and when I have my SP back in my hands I just take 12 of em that sound like they are in a similar mood or something plus 12 drums to that and stuff those into the memory card. I find that it'd be very hard for me to restrict myself to just one song to take samples from and it's a good feeling to hear that a bass sound from one song sounds dope with the instruments from another. You do it with drums all the time, why not do it with the rest of the samples as well? :)

Hmm, most of the samples come from one song from my tracks, except for drums. I don't think it's frowned upon at all.
I always add some little notes here and there from other records, though, not to mention little vocal samples.
