this is cool.. im never fast enough with the mark button tho, i gotta use the slow old start/end

Same here. Especially for those 'off beat' chops I want to mark accurately. :(

I'm not quite sure if I get how people play a sample from it's marked point though. The trick is to skip playback of the part before what you've marked, right? Hmmm, someone should make a tasty video of this, even though Wax's explanation was thorough enough already. I'm wondering how this works in practice. ;)

man... see it like this... you have a long sample... let's say 8 bars...
how do you chop it up in the sp? (off beat chops or not)

if you want 8 parts out of that 8bar sample... how do you chop it up?

I mark the "1" + no endpoint --> resample the "1" (you still can use the ctrl 1 one if you ain't on point with your mark...

For chop no "2" I just release the mark point--> the sample plays from the point and press it at position "2" again without endpoint... --> resample -> chop no2

until now it's not that big advantage but you can go through the sample with the start point and resample each chop in one take... and one take means you need to listen to that loooong sample for 1 time only... thats what it's all about... you can't miss the second mark point no matter how close it is... the 404 is quit fast on that shit... and if not use the start/end/level to correct the point... I would tape it but I got some errors with the audio drivers and shit...

We should make a video battle... who chops the fastest?!

Yep, been hip to this 404 work-around for a while, since it is my main beef with Roland taking over the Boss DR line, but I just got the SX and have not tried this on the SX yet. Are you saying Roland let
me down again? Someone please tell me this is not true about the SX. Please!!

7th City said so... I can't try it. (The 303 works like the OG404)

On th SX you can mark you samples without an endpoint, but when you release the start point it goes back to the very beginning. That's how I understood it.

yeah there is nothing in this trick that you 404 users don't already pretty much get, its just hard to explain, you might think there is more goin on than there is, its just, sometimes when you go to turn off mark on a sample that is marked up, you hit mark, and it jumps back to the beginning of the sample, or keeps playin smoothly without glitchin or skippin or anything, and wax figured out that when there is no end point set for the mark, the sample will keep playing out smoothly when you turn mark off, so when you want to resample a bunch of stuff out of a long sample you have on one pad, instead of hearing it from the beginning everytime you resample, you just keep pressing mark once, resample a small piece, then play the original again, unmark and remark quick so you have it for the next piece you wanna take, resample a small part, play the original again, unmark and remark quick, and so on and so forth

WARNING: it's 100% true that this chop method cannot be done on the SP404SX...I feel like Rolands owes me an apology.

Plus, moving pitch to MFX...it's hard to argue that these are downgrades. I guess for the price...but personally I would be willing to loose the sequencer if they gave me realtime reverse and mark points...especially if they moved the pitch and added a mute pad.

This might take me a minute to get over.

yeah after i first posted to this topic i realized that i must have had some hardcore deja vu of when i had the 303. (or 404, had both) yeah it don't work on the SX. i even PM'ed Wax because i thought i was doing something wrong but i was on point, the SX just was not having it. kinda pissed me off and i had to put the SX up for awhile...pulled the ST-224 out for my main focus (just for right now...it is just that dope) and i am getting real fast on it too.

started thinking about this on the SX... tho requires more fingering, you can use the func+copy to chop.

Load up a pad... mark the start then hit the pad so there is no end mark. Next del+mark to truncate top. Now mark the start of the next chop. func+copy to new pad then del+mark to trunc. Next chop.. rinse repeat. The SX is fast, and with the func shortcuts it makes it pretty easy to do this, and it better than trying mark and being forced to listen from the top then resample. If the sample is like a full song, it'll take a min tho.

Doesn't work on the SX at all though, just on the regular 404. When will Roland stop playing around with this feature?

on to that delete shit. i think it erases all the quantize number your using. like if you record highats and kicks on 16. then it would erase them all it happens every time.
