is there a drum machine that has the ease fun and sheer dopeness of a 404 with a BETTER sequencer (does anyone else have trouble with this sequencer besides me?)
ive never played with a 606...any thoughts?

I've also read the sequencer on an mpc blows the 404's out of the water...

i guess my question is: if you love the 404 but wanna upgrade, where can you go besides the obvious 555? is it even necessary to upgrade to a different machine? and PLEASE don't remind me again about madlib doom and dilla on the 303...
the 404 beats posted in the battle section are ILL, so y'all don't seem to have any problems working with this beast

thanks...this forum f'in rules and all of the tips/help/info and BATTLES on here are truly inspiring me...

If you don't mind a little size on the sequencer, the RS7000 is for you ;) Seriously, though, it is a very good sequencer. If you only need it's sequencing features and not the sampler, you could take a look at the rm1x. Its synth engine is also a step down from the rs7000, and it also misses some of the functionality, but it's still more or less the same.

Correct me if im wrong but the quantizing isnt the greatest on the 404.. i'd love to hear any suggestions for what i could do to make it easier
and i would like to try a multi-track sequencer instead of a single track...also i'd like an led screen where you have the option to scroll through the waveform, i think this would be waaay easier for sequence editing...WHY doesnt (didnt) roland throw an led on the 555... :?

There are several ways to sequence on these units; step recording, realtime recording (replace or overdub), grid style recording. Furthermore, there's indepth editing functionality. It's my impression that these are regarded as some of the best, many say THE best hardware sequencers.

Oh yeah, the RS7000 features a very nice swing function which may be cool for your hiphop style.

Here's a review:

i like the 404 sequencer alot. it has a sound ive been looking to achieve for a long time. i can see when making faster music it can pose some problems to get real acurate, just slow the shit down and try and snag the notes on time, i dont make much fast music but when im in the 160's plus , its just double time , im still doing the slow beat. later

I agree with Just_Jeff on the MPC 1000. the sequencer is great, and chopping is extremely quick and accurate with the JJ OS. the 404 seems to me only to suck at quantizing when it's trying to handle alot of simultaneous pads. Also really wish i could skip ahead to other bars while recording a sequence like the MPC. I gave up on 404 sequencing and just resampled instead for a while cuz I cannot stand to wait for the bars to loop around if i need to correct one little mistake.

korg es-1 is basicilly the same as the es-1mkII. except for the metal face and 1 effect. I own both and yss, the mkII looks a lot cooler, also, Dilla used a mkII, if that matters. however, it does suck to try and find cards for them (smart media i believe) but cheap machines, $100-$225. hope this helps.
