Still investigating a 404. Reading over the manual for the 404 and have a question about importing samples from the Cf card.

The manual goes through the process but where I am unclear is this: If I have a lot of samples on the card can I audition each one before I assign it to a pad? If I have a sound in the middle of 100 other samples on the card how do I sort through an assign it to a given pad? Or does everything on the card have to be equal to the matrix of 12x8, or multiples of. For instance I should only import multiples of 12 up to 96? Does that make sense?

I assume I can audition as the samples are played directly from the CF but I just want to make sure. This could be the deciding factor for me.

From the top of my head;

The 404 will try to import every sample that you put in the root directory of your cf card starting for a pad in one of the external banks (you select this at the beginning of the sample import) and use all free consecutive pads until all samples are imported or you have no memory left on the card.

The order in which the samples get uploaded is the order in which the 404 finds the samples on the sard (ascii code sorted afaik).

ok then how much of the file name does it read to put into alphabetical order?

Most hardware equipment seems to see only 8 char or so. I'll assume that for a second. Then how would files: aaaaaaaa2.wav and aaaaaaaa1.wav(purposely show with 9char for example) be handled? Or would this error on import?

Sorry for all the questions but I am trying to get things right in my mind.

the sample with 1 at the end will be import first then the second one.

i have imported many files with names longer than 8 characters, so just put a number at the end or at the beginning of the name.
