Hi guys.
I am practicing to do some live beat sets but i'm struggeling with making smooth transitions (as in Fade in 1 beat put in the other or getting them to play smoothly together). Any tips? Fyi (i only use my sp404sx).

You gotta do it raw aka just start the bea ton time and cut the other one.

That or use FX TO THE MAX lol reverb/delay/tape echo/djfx whatever you feel like using.

Using some accap or some sor of funky sample between beats/before cutting out is also good.

never bothered beatmatching stuff as all the beats are KINDA in the same range of bpm. it also make set really dynamic, not as flowing as a more regular DJ set but if you do small set like 20-30 min people usually find it really enjoyable. from my experience at least.

Thanks Rabot that really helps!
I will go from there.
Are there things I need to be aware of before doing my first set?

Thanks in advance

I don't know.... I usually put everything in order in advance, like from 1 to 12.

I been working on the same thing. The djfx is really great for transitions. You can emulate turning a turntable off. Also I often use the glitch feature, bring in the new beat, then just mess around with the pitch of the glitch.

I'm all about the tape delay (MFX 2) for transitions - put it on the first pad you're transitioning out of, turn up the feedback, first pad ends, feedback's still going and you can mess with the pitch with the 1st effect knob. Hit the new pad and you can use the wet/dry on 3rd effect knob to fade out the feedback as the new pad is starting (while optionally messing with the pitch).

Teebs uses the tape delay (or non-MFX delay?) this way in his DJ sets with the 404 really well. A lot of dub DJs would play with only 1 turntable back in the day and do a spinback with lots of delay to fill in the space before the new track like this.

PULL UP
I also find the delay a nice way to transition on the SP samplers.

I'm going to have to try some of these. I've not really done a 'live set' with 404, only individual tunes...but these are all good suggestions. Thanks for the ideas!

I saw a crappy cdj at a second hand shop for $30. I'm thinking about picking it up and burning some transition beats to cd, then using them between beats on my sp's to get the transitions in.

also remember that you can tap delay quickly, then time/bpm, and use the tap tempo feature to make your delay fx sync with your beat. since most of the caps I mix are around 90bpm I just do it once and it end up working for the whole set.
