Hey, I'm kind of new to music making. Basicly I wan't to play around with music and have fun, nothing too serious. Right know I've got both the Korg DS-10 (synth for the Nintendo DS) and Korg Kaossilator. The only thing I still need is something to add effects and make samples.

Is the SP-404 an ideal combo with both these products? I'm also considering the Kaoss Pad 3 since it has much more effects but I doubt the limited sampling makes it a good trade-off.

Any advice? Thanks!

I'd go with the 404. Ideal IMO. Then again, look who you're askin'. If you asked me to recommend a good dishwasher I'd say 404 all the way. =)

Plus if you get a 404, pretty much any question you have can be answered here since so many people on this forum own one and make good music with it.

Hi use SP-555 and Korg Kaosilator in some of my songs and thats a great combo. Recording a phrase on the kaosilator + using loopcapture to sample it on the 555.

The DS-10 is out? I thought it was only coming out in October sometime, or did you get a Japanese version?

I've got the Japanese version. The synth is fully in English, only the manual is Japanese.

SP-404 sounds really good. How are its effects? I was thinking about getting a Kaoss Pad 3 first, I guess this doesn't even come close in terms of effects?

See above. Reminds me of a post long ago where I said the only thing the 404 needed was a mouth on the bottom so I wouldn't have to spend so much time with my girl. ;)

I've had the Kaoss Pad 3 for a while. The effects are cool and you get a lot more effects, but volume changes are a real issue. That is, the volume differences between two effects makes it pretty annoying to work with. Some effects distort the sound so much because of high volume that I could not work with a headphone with that device.

Another thing that really matters a lot, there will be quite a few effects that you will never ever use. So, the amount of FX on the 404 or 555 ain't so bad in my opinion.

Ah, almost forgot... The sampling/sequencing on the Kaoss Pad 3 is quite horrible, but it's not impossible. Having a lot less pads makes it a real hassle.

If you're into remixing and so on, I definitely recommend either the SP-404 or SP-555.

hey mans,

i have a kaossilator and 404, and i like the combo. to be honest, despite my original plan, i end up using the k'silator on its own, more often than with anything else.

i dig the fact that i can make something, build it up, and then wipe it away like the monks raking sand.

but in combo w/ the 404 you'll enjoy it. the only fing is that the k'silator SOUNDS like a k'silator. so the 404 effects can help warp that distinctive sound. i think i'd now be able to point out the sound in any recording.

good look on the kp3. iwas actually looking at one the other day. oh well.

as for the 404 and ds-10, those would be great together(as i have both though i don't really mess with the ds-10 that much lately). one thing to keep in mind is if you're pc savvy, then you could use the wi-fi to send midi messages to your pc, in turn controlling a 404. this could be nice if you were to need a song mode.

but yeah the 404 all the way, or any sp for that matter.

Should I consider the SP-555? What can I do with it that the SP-404 doesn't have?
