Last night I scored one SP-404 on eBay. I came across this forum today by chance and doing so has whet my appetite somewhat.

This will be my first hardware sampler! I'll be using it with my Yamaha RM1X, which I see has warranted more than a few mentions on these forums.

To top it off, I'm getting a padKontrol next month!

Wish me luck in my electronica adventure...

Here's something you'll want to know that for some reason wasn't in the padKONTROL manual. Midi out on the thing only works when it's plugged into the wall, so you'll need to buy an adapter. Good luck. =)

^yeah it's very WTF but not a huge issue in the long run

welcome eldwarfo!
those RM1Xs look very nice, i wouldn't mind one myself. how long have you had yours?
do you use it more for studio or live stuff?

the padKontrol is a beauty, goes great with the SP too

I've been using it in my bedroom, for about 6 months now. Just some simple stuff, getting to grips with it, but I've wanted to introduce a sampler for some time.

It is my intention to use this setup live at some point though. My band are currently working on an electronica/live instrument project and it looks like I'll be handling some beats and ambient/noise parts. We did something similar on our last recordings, but this time we're going for a seamless mix of the analogue and the digital :)

a question on the padkontrol (just something i'm curious about). i assume it has pressure or velocity sensitivity...does the 404 recognize and then remember these pressure sensitive hits, when recording patterns?

Yes the 404 can remember the midi events/velocity, etc.

What about attack and decay? Can it do it via midi? I think not, or whut???

Can I do 16-level-velocity-shit on the padkontrol ? Has it a roll function?

You should be able to. Not sure about 16 levels, unless the padKONTROL has that function. But the 404 accepts of events of midi.

16 step velocity is preload scene #30, and the roll / flam features are very fun and musical with the touchpad.

apparently pressure and velocity sensitivity are different terms
the padKontrol has velocity sensitivity which the 404 definitely remembers and records the input of

pressure sensitivity is something that only the Trigger Fingers purports to have as a feature. I think Jim Y figured that 'pressure sensitivity' translated to a form of aftertouch and the term was a bit misleading

hmm ^^ that's very interesting. i didn't know the 404 retains that info (i thought external pads were only useful for expressiveness on 'live' playing).

having a bit more feel / accents in the patterns of the 404 would really change the beat process, non?

definitely man, it's great for hats and other rhythmic parts

you could achieve the same effect with any MIDI keyboard (that has velocity sensitivity), the 404 will record the MIDI velocity data and replay it at the various volumes

very handy
