This past week I've been working exclusively in my SP-404 and I'm loving it. Usually I use my SP to collect and process samples to chop and sequence on my mac.

When I first purchased my og404 in 2005 I would load my disk onto the computer I would plug it back to the SP and play around, build up some soundscape or make a beat or two as a fun exercise to challenge myself and stay sharp. Over the years I've gotten away from that.

Now I'm on a high in the swing of this workflow and I can see getting ahead of myself with bouncing samples down : ruining the sound and not being able to get it back.

So if anyone has any general tips, or even some fundamental techniques that I might be overlooking, I'm interested in hearing what people have to share.

thanks

Some things I do when laying down resample beats:

1.) Create a metronome hi hat: Record just a hihat with some silence after it. Use the Sample End to change the speed of it. Then play it back while recording your kick and snare. Be aware that you can only record up to 4 mono voices at a time or 2 stereo voices. So if your drums are stereo, you'd do one resample of just the hihat + snare for a bit. Then on the second pass, add in the kick with the pad that has hat and snare.

2.) Build your tune in 'pieces'. If you have several sections to a tune or a spot where there's a 'breakdown' etc., put those pieces together individually. Then resample them one after another.

3.) If you're wanting to use the compressor on your track, get your levels right by finger drumming most of the elements you can together. Even though you can't resample that many pads playing at once, you can hear how it will sound and adjust the pad volumes to get the sound you want with the compressor settings you will use. THEN do all your resampling to put the beat together without the compressor on. When you're putting on the final pad, THEN kick on the compressor on your nearly completed beat for the final resample. It should sound pretty close to how you tested it out.

4.) If you're wanting to use lots of effects, a 'cheap' way of doing this is to record some tweaks of the effects on to other pads then play them out resampled rather than trying to switch between them all during the resampling using MFX. Your FX will sound tighter and more intentional this way, imo.

5.) If you're finding that you can't do what you need to do via resampling, bounce to tape recorder then back into the SP. Obviously, you want to try to for the highest quality recording you can when going to tape so it's not too much different when played back into the SP.

6.) Try everything! :)
