pads are smaller on the 404, no velocity makes it far less dynamic sounding. i just picked up a maschine mikro and i can say it is easier than the 404 in the finger drumming department...but i would aslo add that it depends on whose fingers are involved! it's a skill for sure.

606 pads are better for this. look like 404 pads but feel more like mpc pads. actually feel like roland phantom pads

Yeah that was dope. Speaking of 505/555, I'm sure you guys saw the ProZeiko 555 demo: http://youtu.be/t_SftlBI-X8 . Nice two hand/finger rolls. How much bigger are the pads on the 555?

I have been playing around with hats for a while on drums. just dropped (http://jahyel.bandcamp.com/album/microwave) which is me practicing finger drumming on the 404 mostly and some 2000xl (non 16 levels). Iv found the more and more and more you do it the more it becomes natural. I plan to keep practicing and just put the work in to get to the level in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHO7KtZDfxA

iv found that you can get a lot of nice ducking in the hihats with compression and the order that you resample in, while still using one or two hats (100% velocity and like 80-90%).

I didn't think there was anymore technique to finger drumming that was more than keeping good rhythm and having the pads suite your style, much like how everyone makes their tracks in their own workflow...hmmmm...

Like if I find it's easier to use my right index and middle finger for certain beat, I assign the pads in a way that makes that possible. I think being comfortable is probably the most effective way to finger drum. If it's feeling really awkward, then you might try moving the pads around to something that suits you better.

That said, it does kinda suck that 404 recognizes midi velocity but doesn't sense velocity in it's own pads. :(
