I have had this happen quite a few times-

Rec 2 bar sample- figure BPM- create 2 bar Pattern with same BPM- record sample 1x at beginning of Pattern- then on Pattern playback the sample plays for 2 bars, then the next 2 it stops, then the next 2 it plays again- and so on.

Tips or suggestions?

Thanks,

Om

I have had the same thing happen. I just got my 404 yesterday. I found that it only does it when I'm trying to record a looped sample that goes over both bars.

I have no idea why it does it so sorry I cant help but yeah its really annoying.

Im disappointed with the pattern sequencer because I use fairly long samples, so I have resorted to created loops through re-sampling.

But drums through pattern sequencer is fine.

this is prolly caused by the sample mode.

Short: You have loop on.

Triggered once, the sample loops forever, but when triggered again it stops, so on, so on.

That was the problem- thanks!
On a slightly related note, I looked in the 555 manual- it does not remember Pattern tempos either- doh!
Was thinking an upgrade might solve some of the quirks the 404 has for me- oh well.

I guess if you assume the designers were thinking of users just making beats with short drum samples then Pattern tempo becomes far less important.

does having it on gate and loop fix this?

no, it's fixed by turning loop off, and if you have gate on, turn that off too.

What gate does is play the sample as note off, that means that the sample plays as long as you hold down the pad.

Turning OFF gate and loop on the sample in question solves the issue.

Om -

the gate button can be your friend for Patterns - say you have a 1 bar length melody sample inside a 4 bar pattern.

If the sample is on gate you could - for example -

quantize on 4 -

then hit the sample on beat 3 of bar 1 and hold it down only for one beat -

then on Bar 3 - beat 1 -

press again but keep it down for the whole bar so yu have different lengths of the same sample playing at different places throughout the pattern.

if you fed that into a recorder (tape, minidisk, digit etc - there's no loop phrase copy on the 404 -) you could record that 4 bar pattern for safekeeping to feed back in as an entire single sample -

- then go back and fool around with the initial melody sample with its start /end and mark button.

That gives you opportunity to create melodic variations of the same pattern with the same instruments and hopefully in same key - record that then feed that back in as another single sample.
