first i just want to say im not a hater, just someone trying to stick with hardware and
im pretty dissapointed with this and to be honest i think they just came out with this in order to cash in on the hype surrounding the 404 in other scenes (ie rock) where electronic/sampler/drum machine stuff is getting more popular. to me this looks like it was made for a crowd that has extra money and thinks buying used (ex sp 404) equipment is bad and thinks they need the latest ish. my reasoning is that they basically have upgrading nothing useful except maybe the card type is more available and its got the shortcuts printed on there.. now maybe if the sound quality is actually better not somewhere in between good bad quality and a nice sounding casio then it might be ok. im also interested in this new sequencer, but no step? come on thats so easy to add and makes things quicker for production. but i really think this is just to get people who dont have a reg 404 to buy this new one instead.... afterall the parent company doesnt get any loot from used gear sales

sorry if this post is a downer i was just hoping for something cooler and more useful

Roland have not yet released any downloads for the SX - We'll know more when we can see the manual and software editor.

But, it looks like the Editor only handles samples - not patterns. A pity if so because some way to export 404 patterns as midi files would be very useful. If you come up with a great groove - it's stuck there in the 404!

As it's still called a 404, it's probably optimistic to expect any major additions. I'm as disappointed as anyone by what's offered, but not surprised.

On the other hand, Electribes are still being made with SM card slots. Where the F*** do you buy an SM card outside of e-bay?! I'd like an Electribe, but won't touch it until they give it modern card support or at least a USB connection.

Jim

^ huge amount of $ to spend on gear just to get a feature that should be implemented in the current SP range

Sort of, but at the same time, the MV also gives you a whole bunch more of course. I agree though, from my experience the pitch functions on the SP series is a bit weak and it's not thát special or complicated to add to a low-budget sampler or compact sampler like the SP series are usually all about.

I dig this new SP-404SX though!! I sort of miss the DJFX looper FX and it might be useful for live situations, but we'll see. I'm not willing to pay full price for it just yet.

i'm not talking down the MV, it looks like a very serious piece of kit.
but some people don't want/need all its features.

i'm just saying the argument that "if you want real pitching, get an MV" is kinda ridiculous

Open wide for some more giant Roland cock inside you. What a fucking joke. They switch to the cards they should have used from jump and expect everyone to run out and buy a new one. I'm done with roland gear.

I know, but it's alright to be critical. In essence the MV is a regular sampler as much as the SP series are. Hence the comment about it being pricey is still quite valid. :) (For me it's been worth it though.)

What people (here) do need though, is at least a 4 track sequencer, possibly more like a 16-track sequencer and a better pitch function. If the economy gets better quickly, I think we might be able to look forward to a more direct MPC1000 competitor from Roland. Like perhaps a mini-MV. It would have to put up a good fight against Akai's MPC1000 series and the successful JJ OS, but basically there's still room for a new modernized SP-606 / SP-808 equivalent.

Yes, that is kind of ridiculous indeed. But it is still one of its major features. Doing a bpm sync and changing the pitch is child's play on an MV. Truth be told, you can do it on many of the SP samplers as well, like the 606. Okey, the 'make keyboard' pitch function of the MV is a tad more advanced, but it's basically the same trade.

FYI

The new sx manual is available here...

http://lib.roland.co.jp/support/en/manuals/res/14997200/SP-404SX_egfsipd01_W.pdf

It's seems to be a bit slow and took me a couple times to get it to download. But now to get reading...
