Hello,

I know this question was asked many times but I try to find a different solution to it.

So, as you know Sp 404 SX don't receive volume midi messages for individual samples/pads so my question to you is if it possible to send from a controller velocity midi messages and in this way to change the volume of the pad.

I want to know if I set a fader of the midi controller, to change the velocity level of a sample, then I will be able to up or down the volume of the samples.
I cant make a test cause i don't have a SP yet and this problem keeps me away from buying it in tis moment.

The only thing I am afraid is that after I use the fader of the controller the next time the note will hit again in the pattern will initialize the volume again to a higher note so will be useless.

Waiting your opinions and I hope I was understood.

Thanks

I don't know about that, but why not just set the velocity of it in the sp? If you just want to lower its volume that's very easy to do... but if you are wanting live volume effects for specific samples, I'm not sure if you can do that with midi.

Have to say, I don't think it can work.

The way the 404 sequencer works is single track polyphonic - you can't have notes in separate tracks with their own volume fader and the 404 doesn't have external midi controls to it's pad settings where you might have controlled each pads level setting.

Another sequencer with multi-track midi is the only answer for independent mixing of pad levels.

Something *sort of* on topic here, I use a korg PadKontrol with my sp sometimes, and I can play the pads with velocity thanks to that, and I can use the roll feature here and there on snares and whatnot, but I've noticed that I can't use the PadKontrol while resampling, does anyone know if you are unable to resample or record patterns with midi?

yes, you are unable to use midi while resampling.

no, you can't set a slider to velocity then hit the pad on the 404.. the reason being velocity isn't a separate parameter..

note is made up of 2 values (+ a 3rd, midi channel.. no need to worry bout that here), note number and velocity..

when you bang the pad on the 404, it either bypasses the midi interpretation altogether, or if it goes through the midi interpretation, it sends

(note number "x"|velocity "127")

The thing is, the velocity is part of the note message - it has to be there with every note value or else the midi interpreter won't know its a note.

weird... im glad i saw your post cartesia.... i was planning on buying a 404 again to use in the very way you just confirmed wont work. i could have sworn someone said they used the 404 like that... makes sense though. i wonder if it works on the 555.... i KNOW it did on the 606 there were instructions in the manual for how to do it i could just never get it to work right...

Hmm.. I will consult the midi reference and see what I can dig up..

maybe the master volume can be controlled by midi?

i meant using the sounds on the 404 and another device sequencing those sounds and using resample to make a "pattern" resampled to a pad. i really wanted that to work. bummer

If using a SD card (or CF on a 404), you should have 2 midi channels, instead of 1. So you could use 1 channel for high volume and another for low volume samples.
