i am trying to consolidate my samples for an upcoming set, and i want to have everything on one card. all of my cards are backed up to my computer, and now i just need to transfer them to a blank cf card. when looking at the files on my computer inside the roland file there are files titled BKUP1 through 9 and BKUPA through C. in all there are 12 files, but there are only 10 banks on the sampler. i am having trouble with choosing which files need to go onto the empty card, and am wondering if something like this is even possible.
thanks,
js

Hi
Well, you can't just drag them in. The 404 makes index files of it's own that tells it what samples and patterns are assigned to what banks and other stuff.

Bear in mind I'm only thinking of the original 404, not the SX which has enough differences to make the following redundant...

It isn't the 12 backup files that you'd need. The 404 creates these files when it initialises the card and as you can't have more than 12 backups on the card, that's why there are 12!

I think someone had success overwriting existing sample files of the same name, but I don't remember the details.

You might get what you want quicker by shuffling the backups around through the internal A & B banks and build the new card banks from them using the pad exchange function. That is, restore the ones you want to banks A&B, then exchange them to the new cards banks - repeat until done.

My preferred way to have samples available for arranging to a new card, is to export them all as .wav to card in the 404 in the first place. Then copy all the .wav's off the card to a new folder on the computer - then put all the ones for the job on a card and let the 404 import them all.

The backup function is only useful IMO for managing patterns as they are stuck in the 404 format and it allows for an undocumented pattern copy.
I think samples are best backed up as .wavs (or .aif if you are mac-centric), because you might not have a 404 at some future point when you want them and will have nothing that can use the 404's own backup files.

Hope that helps and good luck with the set.

Jim

how exactly would i back them up as .wav? that seems like a much faster way than moving things to a and b over and over again

export your samples, so you have .wav files... collect them on the computer and put them on a new card and import the junk...

cancel+2x resample = export (EXP)
cansel+resample = import (FiL)
