i know those two are almost completely different.well i was searching a midi keyboard to make beats with and found that one...

it was cheap but i thought i could add sounds, like in banks like in sp 404 or whatever...but you cant (at least i dont think) like i wanted chopped up voices on the keyboard.

can you use sounds (voices or instruments) on the sp 404 and use it into the midi keyboard...i want to record it into a software program.

another question how do you get different instruments into the roland edirol m50? my midi keyboard has "okay" instruments but not really that good.

thanx in advance :)

I may wrong, but I thought the m-50 was just a controller keyboard - that is it has no sounds of it's own, it only sends midi messages that make other midi gear emit noises.

Sound like you're right at the start of the midi learning curve! good luck.

First off, do you have a proper 5pin din to 5 pin din midi cable? With one you can connect the keyboard directly to the 404 to get the hang of driving it. That connects from the m50 Midi out to the sp-404 midi in. I don't know the m50, if it gets power from a computers USB port you may need an optional power supply for it to work without the USB connection.

Working via the computer, you need...
m50 usb > computer midi sequencer program - midi track > midi out port > 5pin midi cable > sp-404 midi in.

Note- Nothing whatever will happen via a computer without a midi capable program acting as a go between. To get the keys to play the 404 with a sequencer program, the following are required...
A midi track must be available in the sequencer. The tracks input must be set to the m50 keyboard input. Most programs look for any available midi input to take messages from, some you need to specify it.
The midi track must be "selected", this usually means it's highlighted different from all other tracks by clicking on it with the mouse. The midi track output must be set to the same port that the 404 is attached to - something like "Edirol PCR midiout".
Finally, the midi channel number must be the same on the keyboard and the 404. As they come, both probably are set on channel one in the factory.

The sequencer program monitors the midi messages from your m50, it echoes these messages to the midi output selected for the midi track. The messages leave the midi out port and the 404 will respond if the messages are ones it understands. A midi note message is sent when you press one of the keys and the 404 should play the sample assigned to that midi note. When you put the sequencer track into record, the messages are recorded in the sequencer - on playback, the messages are sent as you recorded them to the 404.
Then, you can select an audio track in the sequencer. Hook the 404 line-out to the soundcard line-in. Arm the audio track for record and record an audio track of the 404 played by the previously recorded midi track.

A problem I see is how are you going to get the midi out from the computer program to the 404 midi in? I don't know if the m50 5pin midi out will appear to the software program as an output port. If it's like the Evolution keyboards, you must install a driver program in Windows AND make a setting in the keyboard so that the messages on the 5pin midi out is coming from a sequencer program and NOT directly from the keys.
Read the manual!

It won't get any easier with a different keyboard. - And, it won't be going anywhere without that 5pin midi cable to hook into the 404.
