Coming from a mpc, I always sample my sample-line a bit hot. the sample doesn't peak, but I get it as close to simmering as possible. however, from what I've read on the forums in regards to ducking using the compressor, some people recommend sampling quiet while others recommend turning down the level of the samples you want to duck quieter.
When I use the latter method of turning down the levels of the "hot" samples I would like to duck to around 30 while keeping the drums at 127, the compressor doesn't raise the sample volume at all; it just stays quiet.

1) Is there a difference in turning down the level for ducking in comparison to just sampling at a lower volume? I just sample hot as a habit coming from my Akai.

2) When you use the compressor as a side-chain, do you guys adjust the levels after applying the effect? It would seem like the only way to hear the appropriate "mix" while the side-chain is happening? I am used to mixing the sounds first, and then applying effects but for a side-chain, I would imagine it wouldn't work this way.

Good looks, I know this topic has probably been beat to death.
