I was using resample method for latest SPF RC8 and kept getting skips and glitches. I thought maybe adding FX or something was just too much for the 404SX to handle but I tried using Defraggler (PC) to defragment the card and move all the backup .bin files to the end of the drive. It showed 87% fragmented when I started and I also saw the file I was resampling was 5 fragments. The source pad was stereo and the resampling was in stereo so 4 voices which is limit in resample mode on the 404SX.

In theory it makes sense if the card/SP are having to jump around less to read the stereo file and write the recording it would be smoother. I know it is solid state but it still takes overhead to deal with many spread out fragments vs contiguous files.

One thing I did notice was the SP had written all the data (utilized the SD card) in a solid block at the beginning of the card which at least is smart of them.

Give it a try on your CF/SD card if you are having issues and report back whether it helped you or not.

I'm going to give this a try and I'll let you know how it turns out. My CF card is all kinds of screwy. Sometimes I can't resample into lofi or with mfx on without the track skipping or turning into complete static.

I hope it helps- report back! There are also just better performing cards sometimes. If you have another smaller/diff brand or can borrow one to try is also an option.

So after analyzing my 1gb kingston I found that I only had 10% fragmentation but almost the entire card was filled. Only one or two of the 'cells' were empty. I don't even have banks D/H and E/I loaded with anything! I ended up backing up the important files and wiping everything.

Hopefully I won't get glitches because the problem got really bad and I had to do all kinds of workarounds to resample things. I'm not sure if my problem is due specifically to fragmentation. I'm thinking limited disk space. However, I'd recommend dling Defraggler to get an idea what your SP is working with.

I'll give an update in a week or two. Thanks for the info though.

I could see a full card being an issue as well. you could copy card to PC, erase, and try also as an experiment. You can just paste the contents back to the card after you try. Good luck!

if SD cards are anything like hard drives, then yes, it would seem that it could cause a problem. I'd say stay below 75% capacity and you should be a'ight.

So learned some things about SD cards tonight. I was using a class 2 micro sd w adapter. I fount s simple utility that can test the card r/w performance:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Sys ... estw.shtml

I have 4 or 5 cards from 1GB to 64GB. Most showed only 5MB/s write- and oddly the 64GB card in my phone which is supposed to be a class 6 was same 5MB/s. The factory Roland 1GB card same.

I found one 8GB card that was class 4 and it was approx double or more the write speed f all the other cards. It was micro-sd w adapter in my camera. I loaded my 404SX files on there and tested resampling w efects and no glitches.

Card speed rating def seems to make a difference. Just not sure what the limits of the 404SX are like if it supports the UHS-1 spec etc. which allow much faster speeds.
