Location: The desert.
Read the manual is best place to start man. Seriously.

Make sure the little slider on the SD card is not set to lock.

From the manual-

p38:
Formatting (Initializing) a Memory Card
Formatting a memory card will erase all the data on the card.
Hold down [CANCEL] and press [REMAIN].
BANK [C/G]–[F/J] begins blinking, and “FMt” appears in the display.
Press any one of the BANK [C/G]–[F/J] buttons.
BANK [C/G]—[F/J] changes from blinking to lit, and [DEL] begins blinking.
If you decide not to format the card, press [CANCEL].
Press [DEL].
[DEL] begins blinking, and formatting of the card begins.
While formatting is in progress, the dot in the display will blink.
When the blinking stops, formatting is complete.
Never turn off the power while the dot is blinking. Doing so may damage the memory card, rendering it unusable.
Do not modify or delete any files or folders created when the memory card was formatted. The SP-404 will be unable to recognize the card correctly if you do so.

p46:
Initialize internal memory [CANCEL] + [DEL] + [REMAIN] + Switch ON power
Turn off Protect [CANCEL] + Switch ON power
Protect a bank A–J [REMAIN] + Switch ON power
Protect bank A [REMAIN] + BANK [A] + Switch ON power
Format memory card [CANCEL] + [REMAIN] –> BANK [C/G]–[F/J] –> [DEL]

I know how to format a memory card inside the 404, I was wondering about the primary memory card, the one who comes with the machine you know. Can I format that one? I press cancel and remain but it's not like the others! :? thanks.

Yes just make sure it is not locked and that you un-protect any of the banks that may be protected. It is a 1GB card I have one here.

If you are talking about the internal memory the info was already posted-
Initialize internal memory [CANCEL] + [DEL] + [REMAIN] + Switch ON power

Again, read the manual!
