Just got a SP-404sx and can't figure out how to get the whole sample to play by tapping the pad once. If I take my finger off the pad, the sample stops.

I used to be able to do this on my SP-505 but can't figure out how to do it here. I looked in the manual but did not find anything on changing the pad settings to get this function.

Jack Burton ain't afraid of the easy questions...

So what you need to do is press the "gate" button located above the 1-12 pads.

GATE/LOOP/REVERSE are the most important buttons for setting up your pads. Get very familiar with them quick.

The next in order of importance are MARK and the START/END/LEVEL buttons.

Experience builds skill. Keep at it, man!

I know I probably asked a stupid question, but I do appreciate the responses.

I have to get used to using MARK to fine tune the samples. In the SP-505 I used the onscreen waveform to edit the sample, now I have to do it without actually seeing it.

Thanks to all

S'all good man, no dumb questions...You should download a .pdf copy of the manual from Roland and read through it when you take a shit or something, you'll know it like the back of your toilet paper in no time.

If it's long sample, you can hit mark while it's playing then hit start/end/level and use first knob to edit start point. If you reach 30 or -30 and still haven't gotten it where you want, just hit start/end/level to go back to regular playback then hit it again and the position of the mark stays the same but the number has now reset to 0 so you can start moving the mark again.

Overall, I think you'll get faster at editing with it the more you do it. You don't need anything but your ears to edit sound. Visuals are unnecessary. If it sounds and feels right, then that's where the mark should go. :)
