like to use 2 of the same drum hits, cause i think each pad is mono, mpc people know what i mean, by default. it sounds a bit more natural when you use double kicks or "swinging" kicks

Tips from OLD people - ?
Would you also do the same for the hi-hats to synchronize the snare/hats on 2 and 4 -

or

leave hats strictly on the quantized beat and snares on air swing to drag slightly behind the hats?

(have been analysing some beats from drum machines and notice that's what they have done)

i've been wondering about this too, bishojo

the 404's sequencer can be brutal...so i have to really try to capture some shuffle to give it a swinging groove

i have found offsetting other rhythms in the beat can help

Hi drew,

since i posted -

what i been doing is moving the snares either back and forth a couple of ticks or more - and synchronising the hihats - on either a drum machine or you can use buzz (free software drum machine/synth) - the free acid express i guess (?)- or even audacity -

sample - or bring it in as a Wav - to the 404 and using that file as a click/guide track.

Then just record a pattern over that click track striking my 404 hats and snares over those beats.

this is how i lost my temper before when i found the 404 was fucking up its bpm count - i'd spent ages crafting my click track sample only for the 404 to give it some insanely wrong bpm.

with lots of practice you can get better at telling when you have struck too soon or too late - and when you got it dead on that click track strikes.

you can then dump the click track altogether or mute and keep it aside for future reference.

I prefer this way to air-swing only because i don't have to adjust the start sample point if i change the bpm.

This crappy drum machine is becoming more useful as a guide the more i practise on 404. I load it up with diff patterns i find and keep it as a little encyclopedia - but am gradually filling its memory.

is just the way i like doing it - folks have all sorts ways/ and surely lots better.

peace

some trivia - was that a wu tang symbol tattoo i saw on common's arm in american gangster? - the scene when crowe assembles his undercover narcs.

that's brilliant man, i really like this idea

i have a Yamaha QY-70 which has various swing and shuffle settings. i'll record a drum track from the QY into the SP, then use it as a backdrop to align the late hits

thanks for sharing

forgot to mention - this is from that Alias vid on youtube when he is working his mpc.

resample yr snare with a hihat together to one pad - you might want to bump up that hihat volume/eq or something for that one.

That way it's only one pad you have to work at hitting that swing click track - and yr hihat isnt dragging behind the snare or vice versa.

I also resample a kick with that hihat too - saves you polyphony in the end and less mucking around.

get yr kick/hat and snare/hat pads happy then you swing your solitary snare, kick, hats, around and its easier to edit them without having to wipe everyhting and start from scratch.

yr battle 11 sounds real sweet.

thanks man, glad you like it : )

i've just been practicing with the hat/snare,kick combo, it works nice. an added bonus is the slight sound difference between the solo hat and the hat mixed with kick or snare, creates a nice up/down rhythm with the hats

i'm gonna try this with some bass notes as well
