Hi,

I like to sample cheap yamaha and casio keyboards. Has anybody found a good way to gate the hiss out of these when sampling? Ideally there would be an effect with an adjustable threshold built in. Maybe a guitar pedal or something, if impedance wasn't an issue. What does everyone else use?

i have an alesis microgate which was pretty cheap and does the trick. and the boss ns-2 works too. but they only mute the sound below a certain threshold. they don't filter out the hiss of the notes you played. before i went hardware fanatic i used plugins to do it.
i had problems with the casio sk-5 but only with the sampled sounds. with the internal sounds of my yamaha and casio keyboards i never noticed a lot of hiss.

two thoughts
1. check your gain staging - the keyboard should be at or near 100% volume then slowly bring up the line in level on your sampler. If you have your line in level too far up the preamps will get noisey

2. A little destructive, but try using the isolator or EQ to take out the high end hiss and resample

sampling through the SP to another source with the [LOFI] lit chops the hiss off pretty well too.

standard 404 pitch is the best noise remover.

not shure how good it would work into your keyboard though.
