I was doing some looking around and only found a few names of artist that I didn't know. Me and a buddy of mine are getting together this weekend and just doing a sample off, just straight microwave beats, bunch of weed and beer, and just going at it for the night. We are each going to gather a bundle of samples ( I'm just going to fill up a 2gb sd card on the 404 sx). I ran out of new stuff to sample, just roaming around the Internet and the records that I have. Even took my portable table to this local spot and they let me hang for a few hours and sample shit.

I thought it would be cool to just compile a master list of cool artist to sample, maybe even a quick summary of the style, what you might find as far as breaks or open horns, blah blah. There's a sweet post full of studio pics that's been going on forever so this could be another one for the record books. Be cool post to hit up before going digging or just a quick look could find you the next cool fucking sample and intro you to new artist and genre's of music.

John Klemmer- sweet On the saw and a ton of nice grooves sax intros, also a few records of solo sax playing with some crazy delay and reverb.

Vangelis- fucking crazy synth stuff, I think they did the soundtrack to blade runner.

Dorthy ashby- nice on the harp, nice break grooves too, harps and funky drumming.

Gary burton- vibraphone, and has a sweet soundtrack worth a spin.

Hubert laws- I think it's the flute but I don't know the difference between a clarinet. Great for finding open sounds and no looping hits that go on for ages.

That's my start.

This thread could be dangerous. Kind of like a "finding samples for dummies" self help book. There's a song by illogic where blueprint raps about someone who keeps asking him questions like where he digs at, and where he gets his drums from, and he says "ain't nothin wrong with sharin information, but there's alotta little shit I had to go through. It made me appreciate the art form more, and you'd be missin that if I just showed you."

Like I'd be embarassed for someone that claims they got that dusty raw shit when they really just looped a few bars from from "soul vibrations" via a YouTube page.

I hear you, I've just never had that mindset. The "dont bite my shit" mindset. Thats probably why no one posted in here. I remember a post a while back that had a ton of great artist and style of music, thats how i got turned onto a few cats, had to do the digging but it was nice to get a lead. Same as someone telling you about a cool artist they found. My buddy and I are always calling each other like "you hear of this dude". Thats how i found out about Qwel and Maker and Typical cats.

I go digging a lot but i never really get shit cause im like "if i spend 5 bucks on some bullshit id be pissed. It is part of the art form but the shit aint cheap, you know. no one goes blind into a movie section and just starts grabbing movies, but if someone was like, i heard this or that was good, then its like a lead.

So people would actually get upset if a guy who sampled something from youtube claimed that it was from the vinyl? Yeah, he is lying, but honestly, who gives a fuck. For real. I think im just beyond giving a fuck about shit that doesnt affect me. Well, I apologize to the folks who do give a fuck and thought this was one of those "give me free shit" post. Die slow with your secret samples!

Thanks for listening to the beats, springwater. You are among the handful, which may explain the obvious chip on my shoulder.

it keeps bugging me, so i want to clarify: i didn't mean to come off like i want to hoard secret knowledge or judge where people are getting samples from. i really don't care about that stuff. sample from whatever source you have access to, and read about music and listen to it all you want. i just feel like if you tell people exactly what to look for, they will have a harder time listening to the music on their own terms. like if someone checked out hubert laws under the premise of looking for solo flute samples, they might miss the opportunity to engage with the whole music. kinda like cliffs notes vs the reading the book.

the-breaks.com is a great website, despite not having been updated in forever. it's already there as a fairly comprehensive database, and it puts the responsibility of finding out why an artist is worth sampling on the reader. that's where the learning and the appreciation come from.

not tryin to make enemies, i just don't want to enable laziness, haha!

Nah, I totally hear you, I just type sarcastically sometimes. Meant nothing by it. You made a good point. This even goes back to DJ hiding labels. I just never been that kind of dude but its probably because i just enjoy sampling and producing shit as a hobby, and no more no less, so i dont really feel the need to be secretive about any aspect of anything I do music related.

I found out about Hubert Laws because I did a search for Flute Jazz artist and got a few names, went digging and found some cool shit. I just thought that this forum has been such a great inspiration and source of new interesting content that this post might just expand on that ideal, Cool motherfuckers making beats and sharing info. We even have post about specific techniques and MFX uses, but when it comes to the source, its like "hold up, stop right there", which i find pretty funny.

To each his own, I was just stating that I dont think like that in any way. But I got nothing against people who do, doesn't affect me. But there are some lazy mother fuckers out there but i think most of them are on the MPc forums. Dont think you could be lazy and own an SP device, you know. If so, then your like a chinese dude playing in the NHL

Everything is already so open and out.
There is almost no mystery left.
I loved and love the mystery of music, hiphop, movies etc. Thats one of the dopest things about art. Thats what made me fall in love with it.
its like the feeling of liking a girl you dont know yet..and nobody has told you anything about here, or maybe just a few things, which made her even more mysterious.

Now you can find almost anything on the net (not all, gladly) and you have these gay ass commenst on these youtube vids sayin 'IMMA SAMPLE THIS' (almost always in all caps ;) ). Disgusting.

Also these cats uploading all these gems has also two sides to it for me..on the one hand it helps me discover a lot of music and there fore I appreciate it, and on the other hand I think its a pity, because so much mystery will be lost.. There is like this weird thing going on, where everything must become transparant.
The transparent society. The visibility is absolute and the secret disappears.

I think I do understand you though Springwater..You just wanted to share music like as you would do with your close friends and such but then here on the sp-forum. Aint nuttin wrong with that at all.

But there are two sides to it though.

Enjoy the mystery.. while its still there.

Yeah, thats all. I know dudes that wont even post beats because they are worried about someone stealing it. I just thought this forum was full of creative open individuals that would love to share into the same as sharing beats and techniques. But the mystery still exist. Unless you have heard every record ever made, there will always be mystery. even throw on a foreign film on netflix and you;d be suprised at the grooves you would find in the background soundtrack. Those are my hidden gems, shit that aint published on records thats dope. Found a sweet ass sad piano loop in some chinese film about the some going on an adventure like its his last day on the planet only to find out it aint. had some crazy music on that shit.

Whatever, its all good. How you doing scruff, chillin chillin. Still bummed I couldnt print out that album cover. Tried to get zazzle to print out this digital painting i did and they said that shit was copyright infringing. I made the shit but they aint taking any risk. Gotts find a kinkos or a staples or some shit now, just wanted that shit printed on canvas for cheap. Fuck it.
