i'm not trying to come off as an ass, but I don't understand how some people can't get the concept of "SP ONLY". The object of these battles and only using your sp is to make you take the time to actually learn the machine. Most equipment we buy we use to a certain extent, but never indulge ourselves in it's full capabilities. If anything, it expands creativity, not restricts it. Since listening to the beats people make and participating in the battles, I have shunned my other equipment and started to only use my sp for making beats. basslines out of a string sample, and snare drums because i sneezed into the internal mic. If that isn't creative, then what is? SP ONLY means SP ONLY, nothing else.

Sorry for the rant, I just couldn't stand readin these posts of "well could i use my ... for this,......NO"

That's exactly why I don't battle anymore, it also started with using one song for all the sounds and sometimes the track wouldn't have any open drum hits which made it more difficult. It seems like people add more samples to the battles each time, oh well.
Raw303 for me.

You're right I guess. Perhaps we should make it a new rule that once every few times... no wait, that would ruin the idea of winning and deciding which samples to chose.

I think we should add a limit of two different samples or so, that should 'fix' this.

I have to say though, for beginners like myself it's a tad less frustrating when there's a drum sample included. I have to say that I learned most when looking for creative ways on how to make my own drums though, but regardless of that I'm thinking at least some of the new cats here decided to join the battles because of the drum samples. I mean, ever since the 'new' approach, new people have been joining.

All in all, I'm not sure if the cons outweigh the pros,

Cheers

I didn't like the battles when there was no drums...IMO drums are essential to beatmaking, having a sample with open drums is one thing, but making drums out of nothing sucks to me..it's doable, but I enjoy the beats much more when there is a break or kit or whatever...

i think it could get outta hand. i did kinda like the just one sample style. then again having the drum pack on battle 29 was pretty nice too. we should just limit it to two or something like that.

or just have open drums, how much can ppl do with drums really? i can understand ppl have problems with synths and things that mean ppl would have an unfair advantage but who doesnt have access to drums?

I see it as you are trying to expand your creativity using only your 404 in these battles. So making drums out of nothing should be exciting. My opinion, there should either be just one sample, or a sample and either a drum break or a kit with only a few sounds (much rather the break though, so you can enhance your ears for chops). That's just my opinion though.

I also liked the addition of vocal samples.. great to use as filler material, but perhaps too many of those will be overkill eventually.

I'm sure there are samples out there with usable vocals inside though, I think we should stick to two samples from now on.

Yeah, I'm definitely down with a two sample limit. I think the winner should be able to choose whether or not to put a drum break in. It is fun to try and make drums from nothing, but there's no question the track will hit harder with real drums.

hey i have no probs with chops, but the sequencing on the sp303 gets glitchs when you switch patterns in real time. is it an exception to cut out those glitches in sound forge? thanks.

I use the 303 and know all to well what you mean, but I think we should keep it in the box. Maybe try thishttp://sp-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=3786

One question,
is it possible for me to use the subsonic function on my 404 to create the basslines?

Lol, would that be cheating?

AND, adding affects to the sample is ok right?

Thanks

as far as i know every function on all the SPs can be used in battle except the pitch function 505 cuz its noticably better than the other SPs(from what i heard)
