i haven't battled in a long time but i feel like the one box rule (+sample only) helped me step up my thinking. you know how people say think outside the box; well the one box rule helped me think INSIDE the box.
on the flip side i always master my music in the computer now, just because i get better levels.

I know the D-beam synth on the 555 is out, what about just using it for some filtering? I mean it has a filter already but the D-beam is easier to do fast wah-wah type stuff...

yo can you mulitrack into a DAW or is it 2-track only?
not for using fx or editing the individual tracks--only to avoid the sequencer and/or resampling a live performance. i will assume its NOT allowed.

dear Wax, i think the time has come to make a battle/duel, eheh... :)

seriously, i think that if we use another sp only for mastering this is not a problem. compressing+eq is ok. I used different sps sampler only for fx, but after your battle#49 observation i asked here if this was right.
i know however that sp-303 people don't have the awesome sp-404 subbass/looper fx...and sp-404 people don't have sp-505 useful pitch scale function...
...so maybe we could do separate battles like, for example, sp-303 battle, sp-404 battle etc...and how many moderators to do that? or maybe we have to simply remake rules?

i know that in the mpc forums they do something like this (separate battles for each mpc models). don't get me wrong guys, i don't want sp-forums copy mpc-forums, that's only an observation.
is sp-forums ready to go in that direction?
peace

Dunno bout this whole idea. if you can't find a way to win a battle with a 202 or a 303, then all the 555's in the world aren't gonna help you.

unless of course people are judging beats based on non-musical criteria, in which case i guess whoever has the best equipment should be winning every time.

i dont think we have enough ppl to do one type of SP only, also it will make the entries less varied I think..

Hi everyone!
I understand the only SP concept and it's ok for me, but can i take in a sound editor (Sound Forge) the samples that i will use, place silence between them and then record it in my SP with the auto divide function?
And when all samples will be aligned, can i apply a normalize to it?

Thanks!

hi man
i think you should do everything on the machine with resampling or tracking with a recorder or a daw and then back to the SP (this is the case of sp202 wich has no resampling at all); external eq and Mastering is allowed when the track is finished. Anyway those are general rules, but battle by battle every battle owner says his/her owns...

Why is DBeam synth out? Unless the battle rules specify I think anything the SP can do is fair. I would hate not to have the subsonic on 404SX avail to me.

sp addict, you have every reason to be confused..!

I suggest the winners/hosts of these last two battles read the rules at the start of this thread, where it states that the SP Forums Beat Battles run on a 7 day submission period followed by a 3 day poll.

Without the routine, deadline & structure, people get bored, submissions drop off and the forum suffers.

The SP Microwave battles were an experiment that worked successfully for a couple months during a time when the regular battles were dragging out to two, three weeks or more. The difference being it worked on a 7-day rolling schedule (much like Stones Throw Battles, for example) beats were 60 seconds or less and anyone could upload samples, not just the winner - so there would always be something to flip at the start of the week.
The SPMB could be kicked into life again by anyone at any time :)

There are also Resample Challenges which are the least patronized battle here. You generally have non musical source material and can only use that material and 1 SP to make a track. Very fun!

I'm sorry, i don't quite understand the "usable time stretch" exception. I use a 202 so if this could be explained in more detail I would very much appreciate it.

i'd say they're speaking of the 404 timestretch being unusable, it basically modifies the bpm (like a pitch slider on a record player). but the 404 really weirdly chops it up, although probably useful for lofi beats. Sounds like a really bad slow mo on the likes of moviemaker etc
Here's an example of it:

IMO pre production sample editing should now be allowed given that so many new users have an sp404mk2, and that machine has pitch shifting.

Perhaps even limiting pre-production to pitch shiftng, or other basic sample editing functions. (IE.) No effects.
