Yeah, it would be nice to get some more voters, but the poll runs till Saturday, so there's time. :)

blindfold

interesting approach to the sample. Love the fills and fx. My biggest critique is that the drums arnent quite sitting in the mix and don't quite suit the feel of the sample. Lots of high frequencies on the drums but little lowend.

E.simon

I like the approach to the sample with the fwd and reverse chops; nice psychedelic vibe to it. The drums were very understated, which is a shame because i think that if they were a bit more prominent could really add a lot of momentum to the track

Dj just jeff

Nice pad/drone intro on this one. While i do like the reverse drums, they would probably be best for only a portion of the song, building to something heftier later. I think you have a cool idea here, but the idea never quite gets developed or pushed to that next level.

Beard face

I really like the experimental vibe to your work and the fact that the drums are so prominent and fit the composition well. The only thing that I could emphasize here is that the composition feels a bit scattered and that elements stay pretty homogeneous throughout the mix. I personally think if you worked on developing concrete sections that would help orient your listeners more. Wonderful overall piece/mixdown

Teewok

Wonderful choice of loops, and layering of the sample- I'm quite partial to the fuzz guitar over the classical. Some areas to improve on in the future could be the timing of the elements...sometimes loose works in your favor, sometimes it is a barrier toward getting the most out of your composition

Truthfully Bored

A bright straightforward version of the sample. I really like what you did with the vocal sample and there was a solid feel of movement throughout the piece. The distorted chord sound that you have didn't quite sit in the mix well for me, though.

Kel-

nice flip of the sample, man. This piece developed well and layered very nicely (the guitar harmonics and the arpeggio sections). Even though sometimes the programming seemed a little sloppy as far as the synchonization of samples, this delivers some beautiful moments and would benefit from being developed into a more full song :D

Wax Inspector

I love the textures in this piece- very original, nice flow/progression. This is another that that I'd love to see developed into something more complete.

Phemox-

I like the timing of the samples here and think that it makes for a good skeleton to start building stuff on. You might want to work on getting your volume a bit higher and focus on adding some higher frequencies (the mix seemed kinda muffled).

Its a close tie between Wax Inspector and Kel. The better timing wins it for Wax Inspector.

Thanks for the c&c, yeah, I sort of overused the isolator and at some point there was simply no turning back. The volume is a real issue I'm having with most of my beats and gear though.

How do you guys get it to sound at a normal sound level when everything is all mixed? Do you any of you use a DAW for that?

although i don't own an sp, i can tell you that first and foremost getting the sample into the sampler as loud as possible without clipping is your first step.

After recording your sample to a computer readable file, use normalize to boost the volume.

thanks for your feedback lodger, your right about the drums, i really have to practice that on a 404, i usually use a break or make drums on my mpc.
but i will try it again on a 404 in the next battle.

@lodger: I know what you mean concerning the drums, I found them way too loud after I listened to my track the day after. I also recognized that my laptop soundcard records the music differently than I hear it on my headphones so I'll record my stuff into my PC from now on. To be honest I was just too lazy to record it all over again ;)
Thanks for the comments!

If you don't mind, could you explain what you mean by the homogeneous part? Is it because I kept most of the parts in mono & had each sample play at a fixed volume?

Fair call about the composition, its kinda the aim to make tunes that shift rhythms in a lot of my tracks. Was it a bit jarring on your ears to move the snare around between 8 bar sections?

Thanks for the feedback as well. Constructive criticism is always appreciated.

Congratulations to Kel for winning battle #61! Big ups to everyone else who took part in this one. There were a lot of dope beats to choose from. Kel, hit me up through myspace and give me your address so I can send you the tape. To everyone else, if you haven't already got it, download my "Mono 07" EP at
http://www.strangegibberish.net/releases.htm
Scroll down and download it. All of the samples used, except the drums, were taken from James Bond soundtracks. Keep an eye out for a new download from Strange Gibberish Records called "Dosen't Sound Like 2010" available for download on January 26th.
