If you don't count Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em, Straight Outta Compton or The White Room, my first musical love was breakbeat hardcore, aka rave, back when I were a nipper in '91/'92. For your pleasure, I have assembled a samplepack of some of the classic samples or have sampled some of the classics!
For those of you unfamiliar with the genre, here's a compilation I made a while back. It was basically the precursor to d'n'b/jungle...https://youtu.be/PE8IGx6Yb1I

Obviously you don't have to make a hardcore tune tho, of course...you can do whatever you like! It will be interesting to hear the results! Should make a bit of a change!

Usual rules. SPs only; only samples provided; no acapellaz allowed; external bass OK; external speed-type pitching ok for non-mklls; etc. Bonus points awarded for using more than just a couple of samples!

Entries to be posted by a strict midnight PT Sunday 3rd August. Voting Monday 4th - Weds 6th.

Sp202 & SP303 > Boss MicroBR

https://on.soundcloud.com/tZLTWWAWx9Lu35MM7

202 for tuning, timestretch, filter and bouncing; 303 for the rest. I sampled through the 303 Ext Source (for EQ or Isolator) onto the 202, pitched/timestretched as necessary and then resampled into the 303 from the 202. Started with one of the pad progressions, detuned and reversed, then added the samples from there depending on which ones could be got in tune with the pad and/or in time with the tempo of the 2nd sample chosen (the chime-y one from the 2nd and 3rd section, iirc). Sometimes the robot-sounding chorus-y 202/clicky mess 303 timestretches would mean I couldn't always use samples I wanted (e.g the Walking In Memphis piano). Once the 303 had in all the samples i wanted that were in tune/time, it was just a case of hammering out an arrangement.

Pad chords were extended either by resample-copying to one pad, reversing it and then resampling the two played one after the other and hoping the join wasn't too audible or by looping them and playing them individually like a synth using gate mode. Then they were either sequenced, or the progression was resampled using a metronome as a guide. The choppy synth on the end section was the individual chords from the Moby pad played staccato, recorded into the sequencer on a slow speed then sped up to the song bpm for playback to sample into the 202 and bounced back to the 303 as one sample.

I just decided to go with the bad time stretch from BPM matching or whatever on the 505- it allowed me to slow things down in a way I was looking for. I had to keep some things mono 505 has only 8 voices I think. I only had drum chop and a hi-hat I made sequenced the rest played live. Used octave on things, resampled a lot, tossed a lot. Worked fast tonight to get in on the deadline. Fun to get something in the game. I was also very selective on what I brought in was helpful not to have too many samples.
